Transmission gets stuck in 1st

I have a ford 4000 hd industrial with a sherman tranny. It seems that whenever the tractor gets twisted,for instance, one wheel going in a hole, the tranny gets stuck in 1st gear. It may happen in other gears also but so far,whenever it has happened I have been in 1st gear. I can shift into reverse but the engine will just die because two gears are opposing each other. to fix it I have to remove the shifter plate and move the fork back into neutral manually. when the tractor is on flat ground it seems to work fine. p.s. it is a four speed. Any incite would be appreciated. Dan

guess it's time to build up/repalce that shifter nub and check that shift guide pattern.. might as well check detends and forks for being loose.. etc.
