I have a jd 1070 with about 2500 hours. It runs great but after I run my 90" finish mower for about an hour it gets a little tough to shift. When I mow I really only use 2nd gear and reverse in middle range. It almost feels like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. The only thing that I have checked is the free-play and it is now adjusted to spec (5/8"). When I pull my 7 foot scraper blade around I don't have the problem, but then again, I am not shifting quite as often. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks a lot.

Another thing that I forgot to add is the the pto always grinds a little when I engage it, it's not much but that doesn't seem right. I know that the pto clutch is disengaging.

If you are getting a grind everytime you put the pto in gear your clutch is dragging a bit. The heating and expansion might be the culprit for the hard shifting. If the tranny is a bit stiff to disengage and grinds a bit to put back in, most likely the clutch is not fully disengaging.

couple of things to check out. I ran onto a dozer with a sticky mainclutch. It freed up fine when I unstuck it, but the next day was the same. I pulled the lower clutch pan and found that the rear main was leaking and gummed up the disc. I was surprised that it didn't slip.

Another thing, if the pilot bearing is worn and lets the input shaft to the tranny sag just a little it will cause the disc to tilt ever so slightly letting the edges drag a small amount.
