I am adding a trailer receiver for a 9000# NorthernTool special winch,
currently $349.00 w/ FREE shipping. Now I know, I know, it is a pile
from China but this is not like my wifes FJ Cruiser where should we
need it, it could be a life threatening thing. There I went WARN. This
is just to drag maybe a dead tractor or whatnot on to the trailer.
The load is STRAIGHT out the back thru the Alum fairlead you will see.
I guess I am looking for opinions, I do NOT want to add anything, I think
it looks fine but I am toying w/ "X" bracing BEHIND the 2" x 8" x .250" thick
channel all the pressure pushes against. I do not want to X brace because
I have turned the insides of the trailer into a storage area and i will
intrude into my height if I brace...I will if I have to, i am leaning towards
doing it but I wanted some opinions from any PRO Fabricators before
i weld it up if any PROs should see this...

All the holes you see are for plug welds. The stars were for fun. :D

Pics tell storys....

In the above pic you see a 3" x 1.5" x .125" C Channel behind the 2x8,
so there is "something" there. Hmmm should I add some 3" tall X bracing
behind the winch in the center up there?

The lower 45* gussets are not sitting plumb...just moked up w/ weak magnets...

For clarity, this is a winch mount, the winch mounts to this part. This
part plugs into the receiver I am welding on to the trailer and the winch
cable will go out the rear instead of what normally would be the front...

Artisan, I see why you are thinking about the bracing...I think I would do that myself...I mean it is more work initially but then you can be more confident....Just my 2 cents...I would brace it..

It looks like you have a pretty solid idea, I posted a link to another forum where someone made a similar mount. They based the support off of the A fram part of the trailer where the hitch is. That may be stronger steel, since it is the part of the trailer frame that tows the rated load. There is also another design that someone has on the red trailer. http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/P.And.L.Welding.And.Fabrication.660-563-1775/picture/gallery

I'll just say what I would do and you can go from there. I would cut a hole all the way threw the channel,I didnt get a pre-made reciever hitch I went out and bought the square tubing that way could get more length, that way my bracing was the trailer itself not what you had to build of the front of it,cause the further you go out going to have alot of down force on it,if having to pull something lower then winch. I also drilled the holes were the smaller square tubing is slid as far as it could go in. The diffence between what my length of reciever to yours was atleast double, and would have been sticking threw the back of that second piece of channel in picture and welded on backside maybe even had alittle more bracing back there. The front side may of been a piece of channel running vertical and welded flush with just enough room to easly get the pin in. Hope maybe some of it makes since, wife was talking to me about going to eat while I was typing:laughing:

I would put the lower 45* braces vertical rather than at an angle.
I like the stars
I see no need for anything from the back side (underneath)
Put some expanded metal on the horizonal brace and you will have a no slip step.

I agree I would want the receiver tube going threw the Channel Iron and braced out from there.
Say 6 inches threw and a brace welded on, say 15 inches welded on top and bottom of the tube. doing it that way removes the stress points on the tube, if mounted on the outside only.
Just a thought!
