Go to www.trailerplans.com to get PROFESSIONALLY designed trailer plans. This is not an area where one wants to be cheap. The plans are well worth the $30-$40 as they are designed by real engineers who know what they are doing. The directions are excellent and the plans come with materials lists and optional construction features.

I am sure your insurance agent will feel a lot better if you built something from proven professional plans than from something that was free and just thrown together.

I would never trust hauling my expensive equipment on a potentially poorly designed trailer from free plans. All it takes is one accident related to poor design and you will be in a world of hurt financially. The $30-$40 investment seems good considering just that alone. Remember, you get what you pay for.

If you have a Vocational School nearby that teaches welding, chances are they will have plans.

The $40 or so dollars spent on plans should be a minor cost compared to the rest of the trailer!

Have ever thought about taking some measurements off of someone elses trailer and making your own plans from them. I did this with a snow blade several years ago.

I have never owened an enginenered trailer that was under 20ft that was 1/2 as good or pulled as strait as the ones I've built my self. I'm not against bought trailers, but most do not have enought metal in them to holdup to the weights they are rated at. Just my 2 cents.

Cleatus,

Most of the ones I have examined would bear that out.

Every trailer I have ever seen/used has been abused and over loaded. The flimsy ones don't last long before needing repair. I guess trailers are one of those tools that are hard not to abuse.

I have seen a couple of nice sturdy ones, but I think they were home built. Down side is they are very heavy.

Then you've got a problem on the car's pigtail..

Some Ford trucks have separate circuits with their own fuses just for trailer lights. That way, if you short a wire on the trailer, you still have lights on the truck.
