Looking at either of these two BX models, how long and heavy should I be looking at for a trailer with FEL and BH attached?

Thanks

I would recommend at least a 16' 7000lb. rated tandem. I would personally even look at a 18 or 20' trailer for the extra versatility.

I use a 16ft Big Tex car hauler (5K capacity) to move my BX22 (with FEL and BH) around. Handles it just fine.

Technically a small 3500# utility trailer will work, but it will neither be safe or user friendly. There are many horror stories here and elsewhere of how single axle trailers become very unstable with any amount of load on them. Not to mention the lack of brakes, a near 3000# load, with todays light vehicles it an equation that leads to disaster.

Go with a tandem, 14' (MINIMUM), car hauler-type trailer WITH BRAKES . You will never regret it!

BTW: Invest in some good Grade 70 chain to tie it down with too. Nylon straps are not for tractors, no matter what they say.

I have a B1550 with a FEL and a HEAVY Landpride rake. I use a Big Tex 18' dual axle Landscape trailer with electric brakes. It is rated for 5000 lbs...but axles are 3000 a piece so actual gross is a bit heavier.
I also carry by earth/plow blade and posthole digger altogether on the same trailer.
I absolutely use chains on the tractor...with binders.
I do use straps for the other implements if they aren't attached to the tractor at the time.
I have heard others say use a car trailer...but they were twice the price and much less versatile than the landscape trailer.
I can safely haul 3400 lbs of tractor, etc.
Brand new this year the trailer was $1900.
I made some plywood sides which easily come off to give the trailer leaf/brush/log/stuff hauling ability.
I pull the whole thing with a Tacoma quad cab TRD pickup.
I go 500 miles roundtrip to my vacation property up reasonably steep hills.
Chain binders = tractor never moves an inch!
The load is absolutely rock-solid stable - even during somewhat sudden stops.
It is important to add load stabilzers when loading the tractor (cheap - 2x$20 each +plus welding costs of $40) as the Bog Tex doesn't come with them (some landscape tailers do).
I think the BX tractors are about 400 lbs less than my B tractor.
I agree - the auto trailers are heirloom quality, but the landscape trailer is much more versatile, easier to store, move, adapt and drive. Mine isn't cheap or flimsy - it easily handles my tractor and stuff.
Love those electric trailer brakes!
Hope that helps.

Maybe you can learn from my mistake. Last Tuesday I bought a new BX23 from the local Kubota dealer. I already own a 12', single axle (no electric brakes), 3500 lb, landscape trailer. I ask the salesman if this would be sufficient for short hauling and he said the 12' was fine but I should get a two axle, 7000 lbs capacity with electric brakes. Since my new tractor was going to be ready for pickup on Thursday, I rushed to my local trailer dealer and bought exactly what the Kubota salesman suggested. Well, here's the real scoop ........ the BX23 will fit on a 12' trailer but just barely! On a 12' trailer you will have three ways it will fit: 1. Everything will fit inside by backing on and moving the BH all the way left or right. 2. Backing on and resting the FEL way up on top of the landscape ramp (not acceptable to me). 3. Driving straight in and resting the FEL on the trailer tongue. I use number 1. Now, with that said, if I could do it over again I would definitely buy the same model trailer but in 14'. To me, as a private user and not a commercial guy, that would be the ideal size. If you want to transport your tractor with a bush hog, finish mower, box blade, etc., attached instead of the BH, you WILL NOT be able to fit everything inside the frame of a 12' trailer.

One more thing that may figure into you decision ............ Many trailer manufacturers mass produce 16' dual axle trailers but consider 12' and 14' dual axles to be a special order. I paid $1695.00 for the 12' and found out later that the same thing in 16' was $1620.00.

And, like another post said, use chains and binders instead of straps.

Good luck and hope this info helps.

* How much does it weigh?
* How long is it?
* Will you carry other implements in the future, and if so how much do they weigh?
* How long are they(extra implements) and how much additional room will they take?
* How much extra gear, fuel, toolboxes, ice chest for drinks and lunch, shovels, picks ect will you carry?
* What else will you carry, how heavy is it, and how long is it(I carry tractors, Cub Scout floats, lumber, pipe, firewood, metal panels ect since I have had mine)
* What do you have for a tow rig? What's your GVWR and GCWR?
* Is your tow vehicle equiped with a brake controller, and if not how hard is it to add?

Once you know those answers, your question will be pretty simple. As you answr those questions, you may be surprised at how quickly weight and length add's up. I was when I did the numbers for my tractor and gear.

Without seeing those final numbers, I would not go less than a 16' 7000lb dual axle with brakes. It would amaze you how fast you can use up that length...

As I mention above, I use my trailer to haul all kinds of stuff that I never planned for. It is really handy to have around.

One other note as you look at trailers, make sure you get a spare tire and mount. Really stinks to have a flat without a spare... Most likely the spare from your truck will not fit. Nor will your lug wrench.

Also, make sure you get lots of tie downs. Mine has plenty of chain points. It did not have any rope tie hooks though...

How often do you plan on towing, and how far? If it's once or twice in a lifetime, and it's only 15-20 miles or so, you can get away with alot smaller trailer than you would think. I've towed my BX23 with an 8' Ditch Witch trailer, model S2A. I towed it with the Hilux pickup shown in the photo. It's a single axle, no suspension, tilting deck trailer with a tongue that's about 6' long, and 2900 lb capacity. The 6' tongue allows the backhoe to sit over the tongue so the tractor fits.

Did I make it 20 miles back and forth between my house and the Kubota dealer two times? Yes. Did I drive the truck like it was a racecar or weave in and out of traffic? No. Did I leave lots of room between me and the person in front of me, and look very far ahead to see what was comiing up? Yes. Would I tow the BX23 a long distance with this trailer using the 1/2 ton Hilux? No. Would I tow it a long distance using a larger 3/4 ton truck? Maybe.

My point is, if you are only going a short distance once in a while, you don't need the heavy industry type infastructure. You can get by with lighter duty equipment.

I will be towing only a few times a year. Also I have a Chevy Colorado crew cab. The only time I would be hauling is for service work.

A guy NEEDS a 7000 pound trailer for a BX23 ( or 24) about as badly as a fish needs a golf cart! They dont weigh NEARLY that much ( MUCH less than my B3030 weighs) and if you load a LIGHT load on a heavy sprung trailer..all you get is a LOT of bouncing every time you run over something.

Look at a super duty "dually" pickup...sprung for heavy loads. Hit a good solid bump and the rear tires come off the ground.

5K rating...14-16 foot..dual axle and DEFINATELY with brakes on at least one axle.
