Trailer - 17p or 18... decisions, decisions...

For Christmas, I want to buy a new trailer to match the x530 that I purchased for my wife - her existing trailer is very rusty, and well... buying an accessory for her tractor is easier than picking out a sweater.

She likes her existing trailer because the tailgate flips up out of the way, making dumping easier - it flips up, hinging from the top edges. I like the design of both the 17p (plastic) trailer and 18 metal trailer. Does anyone have any opinions of which is easier to dump dirt from? The 17p has an angled back, so when it's tilted, it should be fairly easy to use a shovel or rake to completely empty - or is it a pain in the rear? The metal trailer supposedly has a lip across the bottom, that when tilted, digs in and makes it hard to pull forward without tearing up the lawn. Does anyone really love the trailer they've selected?

Maybe buying a sweater would be easier after all! :laughing:

I will say this much if your wife will help you with the yard stuff I would get here whatever she wants.

That is one of the downfalls to the 17p cart. But if you tilt it then drive forward usually it all come out.

You got that backwards... I don't help HER. If it were up to me, the 20+ raised flower beds would be grass, as that takes little effort to maintain. Thanks for the input guys; I've been leaning toward the 17p.

I have a 17P. Great for firewood, leaves, and bulky items. Not so great for dirt. If I had it to do over, I'd go steel.

Can you elaborate? Is it that hard to dump "sticky" dirt? While I'd like to go plastic, I feel uncomfortable about it.

I have a 10P, because of the way they're made, the last of the dirt will have to be scraped out! The tail end sets flat on the ground & there is a slight lip on the edge that holds some back. Also, the ribs in the bottom don't clean out as well.

I use my 10P more than the steel carts! ~~ grnspot

I have the 17 plastic, and it stinks for dirt. I have to shovel out about 1/3 of the load every time. That really stinks! Even pulling forward doesn't empty it out. The anglers rear section lies flat on the ground, and the pile of dirt just sits on top of it.

I like the plastic for the noise and the no "dddoooonnnng" after dropping a hammer or rocks into it but I feel steel is safer and stronger. I went steel with my first lawn tractor nearly 20 years ago and still have it. Don't ask me what its called though - its just a trailer:laughing: It has worked well though. Although you still do have to either drive forward or shovel anything remaining out of the trailer.

I suggested the 17P based on ease of use and fit for your x530. You might have to rake out the lip but that is just about as easy as resetting the rear gate on a steel trailer. If you look at the attachment charts for the x530 the 17P is compatible while the 18 is not. Might make a difference if yo had transmission problems in the warranty period. Probably not an issue using either cart imo.

That's not all of them! I have two more Older model JD carts, plus the 10P that I use the most. I collect them to go with my JD garden tractors.

I wish I could find one of these electric units already pre-made, it looks like someone just built it themselves. It sure would help efficiency if you didn't have to leave the seat!

The poly cart is the way to go here in my opinion. I have three and all have been better and easier to use than the prior 2 metal carts.
