The critters thread has got me wanting a trail cam. From what I have read I like the infrared models, meaning cameras that don't emit light. That way I could use one to watch the house. Opinions please and what about wifi?

I think you are mixing function, purpose and cost. A trail cam is battery operated for independent distant use including recording on the device. A wifi or wireless device is cheaper unit but need to have other means of recording and power source. I haven't seen a trail cam that has wifi, because generally it wouldn't be practical or useful that way.

I you looking to take pictures or monitor live?Do you want a security camera that records? If just a game camera to monitor any "visitors " and take their picture there are a lot available. For game cameras I have had good luck with Bushnell's ,at least the 8mp models.Less than $200.00 and take thousands of pictures and the batteries last up to a year.

Thanks I looked at some Bushnells, a camera with an SD card sounds good.

My neighbors have had mixed experience with their trail cams, the biggest problem being poor battery life. I ended up getting a Bushnell 8MP trail cam with the invisible black LEDs, and it's been great. Got over 1 year out of the batteries and have seen some neat critters.

I've been running trail cams for 9 years. I started with Cuddebacks (terrible battery life in the cold) and am now running Coverts. The Coverts have exceptional battery life. They take 8-12 AA batteries depending on model and mine have lasted a year without having to change them. I have both IR and black flash. I really like the black flash as the game doesn't ever notice or see the flash.

Bob there are all kinds of good trail cams out there but all my cams are Moultrie and they have a set up that I don't use called pay go I-35 and GPS Connect "PAYG" Combo Once your cam takes a photo it goes straight to your computer or cell phone and is used for game photo's or security. I'm not sure if they still sale the solar panels but if you do want more info about the price make sure you click the link for gamemangement link they have new lower prices. Also click the FAQ this just gives you a option to consider but the reason I can't use it cause we live in a dead zone and can't get ATT.
