Would it be advantageous to trade in (or sell) my 1999 4200 in order to purchase a newer model? I have read a few threads where the poster has complained about low power on some newer units. I wouldn't want to get much bigger as far as physical tractor size, which might prevent me from keeping it in the garage. I have about 530 hours on the 4200 now.
Any thoughts?

Can't imagine the newer units will have lower (less) power than your 4200, and don't think (or didn't at the time) the 'power' discussions herein were comparing the older series with the new series. Some just expected more power than they were getting (which may be what we all run into at one time or another). As far as selling or trading, I would talk this over with my dealer. You may want to do that too, and decide if you want to buy outright (in my state you pay the full boat on the tax vs. paying tax on the difference) and sell yourself.
I don't like selling things, as people show up that are just there to hassle about price and leave you hanging. I sold a skidsteer once only to have it come back the next day (his job was done I guess) and complaining about an oil leak. I didn't see any oil on the trailer so figured there was some other thing wrong. I started it up, drove it off the trailer, listening for something wrong. Soon as I went about 10 feet from the trailer, I turned around and saw the trail of dust as he exited the driveway in a big hurry. He didn't even ask for his check back (I found out the next day Monday that he had already canceled payment on the check that he wrote to me on Saturday morning). Turned out the skidsteer ran fine, was a bit dirty from the work he did, and the 'oil leak' was a once-a-day drip from a seal. There is a lesson there somewhere. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I expect I will trade up, rather than buy new and sell the old. Just my thoughts.

I would think it should bring top dollar. Just my opinion, but I think too many people try to do too much in HI. range with a H.S.T. Than want to grip it wont do a burn out in 4X4 HI. My 2000-4200,4X4,hst. will dig a hole with all 4 tires in low or med. range like any model tractor should. But HI range is pretty much useless for work. And since most work their tractors as tractors and not as a hotrod most as mine will never see HI. Way to rough a ride anyway. Good luck,

I would let the dust settle on the new 3000 TWENTYs, I doubt yours will depreciate much more. They will be a whole lot more power in the same package. But talk to yer dealer, now might be better.

Isn't "enough" power a function of what you need your 4200 to accomplish? Does your 4200 provide adequate power when you're using the backhoe?Have you worked your 4200 to the limits of its capacity? For what it's worth, I've worked my '994200 to its capacities and found it to be a serious performer. I brush-hog, log-lift, road-groom, horse pucky gather/pile/compost,chain-harrow fields (30 ac.), snow-plow, ground-level, and spray with my Deere buddy.I've used a friend's 4310 to do the same work andfound it's additional capability to be measureablypleasant but not necessary for my needs. My $$sare buying golds coins and freeze-dried food, nottractor features. I speak only for myself....

To 'beenthere'...good advice to us all. Lots of wankers out there ready to tell us what's wrong or what's not right about what we're trying to sell.A fair price for a fair item is the good fortune for a buyer to find. Caveat emptor. Oh yeah! The 4200 has been a real hoss. I have put my tractor to extremes and have been very happy with the horsepower. Maybe I was reading too many posts on that "tractor lust" thread. Still, I am wondering about those 3000 twenties though.

I just purchased a 4200 HST 4x4 with 400 hrs and it will not pull itself in HI range on level ground. It has plenty of power in low A range, and the bucket works well, but it will not run in HI gear two wheel drive.
I thought the engine was just cold when I first checked it out and it wouldn't run in HI, but after working with it up to temp it still will not pull itself in HI gear. The engine starts and runs great, just bogs down in HI gear.

Can't talk to the 4200 but I have had a 3720 ehydro for almost 3 yrs and it has never disappointed me for power. In fact, I'm amazed at the power this little puppy puts out. It's also been trouble free thus far with a little over 200 hrs on the meter.
