Tractor
Kioti CK20
I got a gear drive CK20 early this year and have been happy with it, but I wouldn't mind a bit more power.

Would I get killed if I traded for a CK30?

Would I be much better off selling it directly?

Thanks,
Allen

That sure depends a lot on your dealer, and of course local demand. I assume that buying/selling/trading tractors is similar to doing so on a automobile. So you can plan on taking a pretty good hit on depreciation since the tractor is so new. One off-setting thing is that you'll save money on sales tax. The practice is that you will pay only on the portion above what your trade is worth as it's applied to the sales price of the CK30. So there is a small break with that - but - I still think you'll be facing a loss of some amount on such a quick trade-in.

Typically you'll always make more on the tractor by selling it yourself. I toyed with the idea of trading up a size on my tractor - but the reality of how much I'd have to pay vs. how much more I'd actually get done with the larger tractor made the decision pretty easy for me. For me, the idea of trading up was more of a "Tim the Tool Man Taylor" idea - frankly I get so much done with the 4310 that I would be crazy to pay a significant amount just to get a slightly larger unit.

So take a good look at the $$ and at the CK20 - the CK20 just might start looking like a darn good idea if the trade-up gets too pricey. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've traded tractors about every 2 years for the last 20 years or so. I've always wanted more power but not necessarily a bigger tractor. Anyway, it seems that on average I've lost about $500 per year on each tractor. I actually made money on one JD and on one Kubota that I'd purchased new and used for 2 years! At those figures, I'd have to keep any given tractor a really long time to come out ahead of trading fairly often. I guess with new pricing going up all the time and eBay being a way to advertise to a large buying public, it happens.
I suppose it all depends upon the condition of your tractor and the resale value of your particular tractor and model. The tax difference is certainly something to take into consideration if the price the dealer offers you is close to what you can get selling it outright. Good luck!

I've never traded in a car when I bought a new one, I've always sold them myself to get the most money for it. I guess a tractor is no different.

Before I bought my CK20, I saw 3-4 used ones on Ebay for the about same price (within $500) as mine was new.

I might try Ebay.

What is the price difference between a CK20 and a CK30 with a FEL?
From some of the posts I've read I think it is about $3000, is this close?

Thanks,
Allen

What you get back in trade in will depend on a lot of things..
One important issue is how you got into the first machine. for example,
Did you put down the bare minumam and finance the rest for as long as possible? in that case, you most likely are "backwards" or "behind the 8 ball" on that machine.
You mentioned that you have had the 20 for only a short time. Does that mean low hours, good mantanence, with no abuse? If so, that will work for you. Lots of folks want a modern, low hours machine.
Consider this sir; A new machine offers LOW intrest rates... as low as 0%, with 10% down. A used machine in this area of the country will require 20% down, and 7.75% for a maximum of 4 years. That makes a modern, low hours machine a hard sell if it is to be financed. On the other hand there a plenty of folks out there that will pay cash for it. And those folks get a modern, low ***, well mantained machine at a real good price. For example, I have on my lot a John Deere 445. 156 hours, clean as a pin, good looking, hydro, it has a little traler that goes with it, one tail light is busted out, runs like a top, sounds like a sewing machine.. Its a good, BIG riding lawn mower. its here on consighnment. The price is $7,000.00. you can get a new one with warrenty, low intrest financing for about 11 grand. It will take a cash buyer for this machine.
Steel is going up and up and up. Your machine will hold its value better simply because a new one just like it cost more.
Yes, you can do better by selling it yourself. After all, the dealer deserves to make a profit again because he will have to buy it back, set it on the lot, insure it, put his money at risk, sell it , Bla, bla, bla.
Don't forget to figure this in; you have some hours on this machine, you have recieved some benifit of the work this machine did for you. Your property looks better, perhaps there is now a driveway to the house, fence, cleared out some brush, or built the pad that a building now stands on... All this would have cost you someting if you hired it done. It cost you something when you did it with your machine also.... What is the differance between the 2 figures ?
Sometimes bigger is better. sometimes I need a bigger machine, sometimes I can do the same work with a smaller less expensive machine, it just takes a little longer. I work for me real cheap!
hope I helped virg

The CK30 is a LOT more tractor than a CK20, not a "bit more".

These machines are not a notch or two away from eachother.

FYI ...

I got did something similar. I bought a CK20 (manual) with FEL and BH last year and decided to trade up to a 30HP. The dealer I purchased the CK20 from figured I would take about a 15% hit on the trade-in. Another dealer really wasn't interested in a trade-in. And another, who was the closest to me gave me basically what I paid for it. It only had 25 hours on it in the late spring. I waited almost all summer for the CK30's to show up. I ended up buying a DK35 and although I lost a few bucks, it was still a heck of a lot less than hiring someone to do the same work and a lot more fun. No regrets on my part.

I spent some time trying to sell it privately but one thing I realized, people could get a new one with the nice Kioti financing and their monthly payments would be less than if they got a loan from their bank for my bearly used tractor.

I worked the numbers a lot myself and I decide there was more to this upgrade than just the numbers. I did get a great trade-in deal but I had decided before hand that my goal was to get a 30HP machine so the money, within reason, became less important.

Best of luck on your endevour.
