I'm almost afraid to answer, but I came to this thread to learn.....

You would never get 10 years with red pine around here!

SR is right. You might want to reconsider your plan, unless you have an avenue to PT the wood. It sounds like a lot of work for something which isn't going to last very long.

Fair enough.
It was mostly a budgetary decision unfortunately.
Any other materials I looked into like cement blocks or store bought lumber for instance was out of the question.
The bit of money I have invested in getting this old saw working, the unlimited free wood supply,
and my free labor made the call for me.

So in the end, we'll see what happens and at worst I'll be replacing this wall way sooner than I hoped.

Appreciate the critique.

My brother built a pretty nice fence out of bigger red oak post, in the 5th year the wind blew it over. lol The rotting post broke off...

NOW, if he could have got his hands on white oak post....

Man, he had put a lot of work into that fence!

I'd be sawing 2x4's and 6's, sell them and buy PT post!!

I've got 60 year old untreated clear heart redwood retaining wall placed in 1960... still original and solid

I switched to homemade concrete fenceposts for the corners and end caps at gates. No local wood lasts more than 10 years in the ground with our moisture.

I've been using this for my wood, it says its good for in ground contact and for docks and piers and stuff/30 years. The longest I've had anything coated with it is about 3 years so far so I guess we'll see. Got it on line from Home depot for about $100 per 5 gal shipped to my house.

A little update on the oak countertops in my kitchen, started on these about 3 years ago when I cut the trees down and milled the slabs..
