Someone told me when going 400yds+ spin drift starts to come into play, so probably when shooting a half mile one has to know all that stuff. For me I'd need a scope at 200yds then I'd have my doubts....

I believe you are talking about "wind " drift, not "spin" drift, I think that's a cycle on my washing machine! ;-)

There's also side drift of the bullet caused by the rifling, although real, it has a VERY minimal effect...

I just never heard of it called spin drift...

If your washer drifts you may want to find a more solid base for it. :D

So that bullet is spinning 360 degrees, which way would it drift?

Yep, there are many effects when shooting long range -- wind, coriolis, spin drift, and even a crosswind jump that can shift the bullet vertically right past the muzzle. I wrote software for a ballistics solver a couple years ago and it is very fascinating. It went into an app called "GeoBallistics" that is sold by a small company in Texas. Ironically, all my hunting experience is short range, either with a shotgun and buckshot (law in my part of Virginia) or within 100-150 yards using iron sights on my 30-30 (what I used when hunting in New England many years ago). Long range shots are pretty amazing since you may be aiming quite a bit up and to the side to hit the target. For shots over 1000 yards, it's common to adjust aim by 10+ feet!

Spin Drift..... Last spring I was talking with a guy at work, he was in the army for 20 years did lot of snipper training and was trying to explain spin drift to me in long distant shooting, I never heard of it before myself but liked his stories. He's been out of army 4 years now and was telling me about his tour in Afanastan, while there he was saying that he took out some of the enemy in long distant shots,(I wont say what he called them) but he wanted me to do a report on spin drift but I preferred his shooting army stories, so I dont know, he sounded like he knew what he was talking about...........

I had a BIL that shot a buck in the head at 400 yards, open sights, 30-06. I was there and saw the shot. A few years later, he shot another one. Same shot with one of his sons with him. Up to that point, most people thought we were stretching the truth.

I hate when crap like that gets posted. It is pure BS luck. The very best shooters in the world can not make that shot. And an ethical hunter would not try it.

BTW, spin drift is real and depends on two factors. First is the SG(gyro stability factor) of the bullet and the TOF (time of flight). The equation is: 1.25 x (SG + 1.2) x TOF ^ 1.83.

So the longer the bullet travels the more affect it has (raised to the power of 1.83). SG can be calculated as shown here: Bullet Gyroscopic Stability Calculator

But it is no much easier to sit around a campfire and talk about making headshots at 400 yards with iron sights....
