Looking good Gordon! How's that new M treating you?

Here's a little wood I split on Friday evening. I invited my wife on a wood splitting date, and believe it or not she went for it! She rolled rounds down the wagon for me and I ran the splitter. We had a real nice time. Split the whole load in an hour and fifteen minutes. Must've been a cord or a cord and a half. Goes fast when they're 32" long and only need to go through the 4-way once. The auto cycle helps too. That ram hardly ever stopped moving. :)rps20170723_191453_869.jpg

Re: Big Tree Small Contractor...a risky business

I am looking for an opinion what the log in the video is worth. So this maple log is 8.5 feet long 3 feet in diameter. Would it be veneer grade. What could it be used for instead of just firewood. Here is a video. Look at the first log that is pulled to the tractor using the winch. This is the log I would like an opinion on as to what it can be used for other than firewood.

Capabilities of a logging winch - YouTube

Do you have a video that details your winch setup? If not, would you be willing to do one for us new guys. My place was logged a couple of years before I bought it and the loggers left some good lumber on the ground. I would be very interested in seeing your setup.

Thanks.

Skidding winches are excellent tools. Now that I have one, I can't imagine working in the woods without one. They seriously increase your production, make a lot of things possible that wouldn't be without a winch, and they keep you safe compared to getting the tractor closer to the action and using a chain. There's several brands to look at, Farmi, Norse, Tajifun, Wallenstein, Uniforest, probably a few others. Watch some YouTube videos, check prices and availability, and sign on the line. You won't regret it.

If you are putting this on the back of your JD 950, you'd probably want a Farmi 351, or a Uniforest 35M (or a similar sized winch from other manufacturers - I just happen to know Farmi and Uniforest better than the others).

I have never made a video myself (too busy working when I'm out in the woods with it), There are a lot of them on YouTube. They are a great tool - useful to pull logs out of the forest, rather than having to make a trail up to every tree you drop. Combine one with a self-releasing snatchblock, and you can pull around corners. For years, I debated about buying a winch. Once I did, I don;t know how I got by without one.

Gordon that is a heckuva nice wood shed.
I'd like to see a picture of the whole building.

Thank you

EDIT: It is small - 10' X 16' I can squeeze in 8 cord
