I prefer bigger rounds too. Once they get beyond 36" or so and start to get misshapen then it's a different story, but if they're mostly round, the bigger the better. I split my 12 full cords/year by hand, but the big ones are fine. I just start from the outside and take off slabs and keep going around.

Yup, that's a big tree, but what kind is/was it, looked like oak, if so you might have to sharpen your teeth, and I wonder how old it was, I'm guessing if that tree could of talked, it would of said something like, MR. Lee don't tie you horse to my branch, get back on your saddle and head south fast, I see a lot of blue coming.

As far as the right size firewood/tree to work with depends only on what size equipment one has. The perfect size for my L3400, 550xp Husqvarna and 22 ton splitter with single wedge, 6-8 inchx30'-40' tall tree, but when I cut firewood like I'm doing now, I cut everything down to 4'' on stump, top off at 2". I leave all sugar maples, straight oak, straight birch, and some ash. Some of my firewood has been 2 feet on stump, and it required more BTUs of labor than the BTUs I got out of it.

it is? was? a willow oak. i never did count the rings... it was 58" DBH. and about 120ft tall. came down in 2013
