I would suggest that you don't plant it in the exact same spot; or if you do, make sure that you pick out all of the old roots to reduce the chances of disease.

I am going to excavate that hole and its surroundings; to do just that and actually replace all the stony, bony native hardpan that currently resides there.
We planted that tree 27 years ago and it struggled most years to produce any appreciable fruit that the birds did not get first.
Now that I have the tractor I can really prepare the ground right this time.

X2! It's important to know why the old tree died before putting a new one in the same area. Good sol is part of the equation. Most fruit trees like a lot of sun: they are not very shade tolerant. The fact that that old tree struggled for 27 years is an indication that the site may not be ideal for a fruit tree. Soil amendments may help, but there may be more to it than that. Think about where it's getting it's sun, does the soil moisture conditions match what that tree needs, etc.

All good points that we will consider before planting.

Agree. And remember there is a difference between dirt and soil - soil has structure and organisms and food for the organisms - excavating it all out and filling it back means you have destroyed the soil structure around the tree and it will take years to get that structure back. I know farmers who claim once they have tilled ground - usually due to getting a tractor stuck and the associated rut leveling - it will take 5 years to get it back in full production. You would be better off to plant the tree in a different spot and make a minimal hole and let nature take its course.

They must want to much for this old Fransgard winch, been side the road for two weeks. Looks like it must be atleast a 20 year old model. Fransgard has kept that cam engage design, mine a 07 model and that part is pretty much the same, just mine dont have legs. All newer models have a but-plate, I think thats better then legs.

I will agree that they want too much for it. Probably $12-1400 would be closer to the mark.
Paint may make it look better, but doesn't help how it works.
