Tractor won't go in gear, but drives in neutral!

Hey all, I just got a New Holland 7610 4x4 with an 8x2 manual transmission with about 2200 hrs. It drove great for a day, the next day (today) it all of a sudden stalls when it's in gear and I let out the clutch but if it's in H or L and in neutral it will move forward. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I'm sick about this wondering if the guy I bought it from new about this but didn't tell me.

The speed (1-4) shift rails and forks have a forward gear selected but the shift lever is out of the correct gate position. You will have to remove the shift cover (put the range lever in N), move the shift rails all to neutral then reinstall the cover with the levers properly placed.

If you remove the shift cover and find the gates all aligned in neutral then all bets are off, there is a broken fork or other problem.

Is it possible the clutch is gone out? or stuck engaged?

Yep, locked in a gear and when you think you are putting it in gear it is in2 gears at the same time which is why it stalls.
It can be a common problem with an older tractor and a lot of hours.
As RickB has said it may be a simple fix.
Many times you will find that it is one gear that bothers the most and many times it's when you try and hurry a shift.

Excellent guidance here, this is the way to proceed. Had this happen on a tractor many years ago.

Bent or broken shifting fork. (for gear selection)

Hi/Low is separate set of shift forks.

I base that on fact that U say it moves but always in gear, be it in hi or low range.
In other words always engaged but clutch still works.

Quite common with age and not a big repair.

Remove the top plate, look for bent or broken shift fork (hopefully bent).
As said re align all gears in neutral and hopefully simply re shape (or replace) shifter fork.

I'd suspect bent vs broken as you'd have heard (and reported) scary noises.

If bent some careful reshaping can often cure the problem.

Thanks guys, it had popped out probably due to worn shifter rod/sloppy shifting on my part. I took the cover off, manually put the three shifting slots back in neutral and reset the cover back on and it's working good now. May look at getting a new cover/rods. Appreciate all the help!
