Tractor
none yet
So I've been hangin out here for the last few weeks prowling around researchin tractors cause I have 20 acres that's kickin my tail and my dad's little Kubota B7500's PTO shaft. Though the little tractor mowed the rough stuff, it sure was slow, very slow. Since I hate borrowing things, I figured it was well past time for my own. I'll be mowing, disking and dragging the open part and clearing some of those nasty tallow trees (if I can get a machine big enough) to push them over or dig them up though I may hire a mulcher to do the tree clearing then just keep it mowed then find something to kill them... There's some dirt work that I think I'd want to do also...

I'm thinking no less than 40hp???

Here's what I looked at today:
Mahindra 5010 (went to look at a 4035 but all they had was a 4025 and didn't like the layout)
Kioti DK40SE
Kubota L3800, L4600 and MX5100 (place was closed but I poked around and crawled all over them)

The L3800 looked pretty small to me so I may scratch it off for now. I really didn't see much physical difference in the L4600 and MX5100 but I was hot and hungry. I did notice the tire size was a bit different and I'm sure the lift capacity of the loader and 3ph is a little more with MX vs. L.

The 5010 seems to have a HUGE platform and controls/shifters where OK except the one for the loader. What a reach!! Nothing that can't be fabbed up though. I read the xx10 were made by TYM? Who's that?

DK40SE... Man what a nice lay out!!! 3ph, yeah baby!! I just don't know anyone that owns a Kioti here in my area...

Price quotes:
$27,500 for either machine (5010 or DK40SE) with loader, 6' heavy duty cutter, 6' heavy duty disc, 1 rear remote (standard on Kioti but was on the 5010) and 18' heavy duty pipe trailer...

Seems a little high to me (E. Texas) but I've never priced a tractor sooooo.... Better interest rate on the 5010 which was 2.99% for 60 months. DK40SE, 4.25% for 60 months.

What say the experts???

I think this was the link that TxJim meant to post: Tractor: Kioti 45HP/Cab & Loader Used

I think you could not go wrong with an MX5100. That is a great tractor, and it sounds like you really want to work the earth with whatever tractor you get. It never hurts to have a little more HP.

Also, I'm pretty sure you should be able to get 0% for 60mo on either an L or M series Kubota. Check with your local dealer, but I think those offers expire at the end of this month (9/30/2013).

Good luck, and enjoy the process!

BTW, welcome to the forum!

You're correct but on the tractor I mentioned BKThorn could ride in air conditioned comfort for $19,000

I have 20 acres of hilly, rocky, marshy, woody and a 1/4 mile drive. I went with 3000# tractor with 30 hp. It's been able to do just about everything except some large boulders.

Just quoted $29,350 for MX5100, loader, mower, disc and trailer...

I've thought about the Kubota L3800 but it sure looks tiny in size, however, my wife likes the price of it better. $18,000 is what the local dealer was advertising it for in the paper. The only different is that package comes with a box blade so I wouldn't know how swapping that for a disc would affect the price.

The guys I work with all say stay above 40hp... Then again they aren't paying for it either according to the wife...

That's a pretty fair price for all of that, IMO. Did they offer you 0% for 60mo on it all, too?

I completely understand the "spousal dilemma", haha. I was trying to convince my wife to let me get a cabbed tractor a couple weeks ago. She finally said "You just do what you think is best, dear." DOH! Trap set! I have been snared in that one enough to know that is code for "I want you to get the cheaper one!" ...so I bought an OOS 5075E instead. ;)

BTW, I know you are down in Groveton, but these guys have really cut some sweet deals on Kubotas for my wife's grandfather. He's bought all his tractors from them, and so do a few other guys I know. They must be cheaper than the local Kubota dealer here in Tyler. Farm Country, Inc. (Sulphur Springs)

Maybe give them a call and see what they can do for you on a quote. Since it would be a package with a trailer, you could always drive up a few hours to grab it.

Yes that was 0% for 60. Another dealer offered 1.9% for 72. I'm trying to get the biggest tractor I can for the note on the tractor at or below my truck note(soon to be paid off) so to do that I think I'll have to do the 72 month deal and it'll still me $25-50 more a month. Now i know kinda what kinda money i can spend plus the machine should last me till I check out of this world. Truth be told the L4600 would do, heck even the L3800 but we just gonna keep that between us... Right?

Hey man, today after work I'm headed to Greenville for the night and leaving there tomorrow after lunch so I may just swing by there tomorrow and see what they say... Thanks

The MX5100 is a really nice tractor and Kioti makes a similarly sized machine, some report problems with the hitch on the L3800. Lots more people comment, "I wish I had gone bigger" than "I went too big", tractors sure seem to shrink once you start using them, my 5740 seems small at times. My original intent was 35-40 HP.

LOL I started look at 35's myself then yesterday when I got the quote on the MX, I sent a text to the wife telling her... My mistake... I could hear the frustration in her reply text... Something to the extent "they just keep getting bigger and bigger!!" but I know as soon as she seen the price tag her ears where closed to anything I had to say!! Lol God I love that woman!!

The physical size of even the 50hp tractors still seem small to me plus after I've been on a Volvo L60E doing dirt work with a 20hp tractor... Frustration!!!

I'm sure it does, our 8540 is small compared to the 8000 and 9000 John Deeres running around our farm and those adjacent.

+ 2 on that. When I was growing up in rural Minnesota, a JD 4240 was a "smaller tractor". I remember trying to explain to my uncles at Christmas what a JD 5103 was. One of them has been a mechanic at the local JD dealer up there for almost 30 years and even he was foggy on that tractor, haha!

I sat on a 5065E today at the fair, dang it seemed to fit me nicely. I can see how you like that series. Clean design, solid construction. I only saw two things that are iffy for me here. Ag tires won't clear the fenders with heavy chains on, R4's would. And there is a safety switch for the PTO that is mounted down low in tree snagging territory.

It really is a great line of tractors.

Where is the safety switch for the PTO? I wasn't made aware of this by my loving dealer. :D

Standing on the left side of the tractor, I could see it with a wire harness leading to it. It's on the left side of the driveline, straight below the seat back about. I don't believe it would be an issue for field work.

That's really great to know! Now if it cuts off when I'm in some brush, I don't have to beat and shout at it trying to figure out what's wrong, ha!

Those have pretty decent ground clearance, so it didn't look horribly exposed. I am not 100% the switch is for the pto, but it is activated by some rod that comes up to the left side of the seat. Something to keep in mind in brush though.
