Tractor
ford 9n or 8n
**** folks,
Im hoping to get a bit of help here on this tractor.

First I will say what I don't know if its a 2n 9n 8n. I bought it recent and no visible numbers, I know it has fergason on front plate. Forgot the year the guy said it was :(

I am new to the whole tractor seen to.

No the problems:
It was running and starting fine, then one day I shut it off. Then it would do absolutely nothing. Even hand cranking wont do it right away. I put the switch, hold the clutch down then hit the push button, and Nothing like nothing had power. Starter would not turn engine would not crank or anything just a slight hum.

So I replaced the battery - Then same problem, so I rebuilt carb and Starter with new bendix drive. I can occasionally get it started by leaving the battery charger on for a few hours then hand crank it and it starts. Rebuilt start just now seems to start engaging but still wont turn over. (possible spark issue?)

Anything you can suggest to check out, or think what it could be please throw that list my way have gravel to move.

Now question about the starter switch.
Its weird to me like it screws downward but goes to empty space?

I cant find one anywhere to replace so is there a way or different push button I can install or use?

Thank you everyone for your insight and suggestions (God knows I need them)

The push button starter (on the deck, next to the gear shift), is interlocked with the shift lever itself. The shift lever must be in neutral, so you can't start the engine in gear, and run over yourself. If it says ferguson on it, chances are it is a ferguson. Almost identical to the Ford, Ferguson & Ford were in cahoots at one time. That pushbutton only grounds one side of the starter solenoid, the other side goes to 12 volts thru the ignition switch.
TAKE THE TRANSMISSION OUT OF GEAR. Use a jumper cable, and jump positive side of battery directly to the post on the starter, and it should turn over.

wow.... this thread is all over.

that push button diagram is for a 9n / 2n, and those indeed could have a 'ferguson system' badge on the grill. a real ferguson has a different starter switch scheme.

the fact the OP thinks the starter not turing over is a spark issue is perplexing.

put a volt meter ont he battery and hit the starter button. my guess is that the battery drops off to not much voltage...
either that or the cables, ends and grounds are pitiful, or even undersized. these need heavy #0 cables, and good clean solid connections.. and a charged GOOD battery. not a charged bad battery that drops to 3v under load.

I guess that's what I get for assuming! I apologize for any bad advice, I just figured the Ford & Ferguson interlock scheme was the same. Sorry about that.

between fergy's of certain age, 9n/2n, and 8n there can be 3 different starter switch setups.
