Re: Tractor died as I was operating it

I haven't tried hot wiring it yet. I would rather just replace the ignition switch

* When I turn the ignition switch to start it makes a clicking sound and that is it.

* I verified the battery is good and terminals are clean.

* The engine just suddenly stopped at idle and when I went to crank it over to restart it, I just got the clicking sound.

* The ignition switch sticks in the start position after turning over and I have to turn it back to run

* My main question is if the ignition switch is stuck to start will it ruin the ignition switch and/or burn out the starter. Is it possible that a failed ignition switch could turn off the engine? I could not restart the engine because the ignition switch is ruined?

* My other thought is if the ignition switch is stuck to start would it burn out the starter?

Re: Tractor died as I was operating it

Have you verified the engine isn’t seized?

Those guys have good points about checking if the engine seized/ran out of oil, etc... better check before spending money and time on ignition problems that might not exist.

I check the oil before each time I operate the tractor. Engine turns and perfect oil level

It seems too obvious, but have you made sure that it has fuel, and the lines / filter aren't clogged?

Several things will ALWAYS happen at the same time and ones assumptions will mess you up bad!

If the solenoid holds the starter engaged in the flywheel and the engine starts but the solenoid does not release, you will know!

I have been thinking about this and trying to understand something. So a starter has a small lead to activate the solenoid, which connects the starter to the battery . But do most starters kick out the driving gear? And only some have the solenoid do that? Otherwise on a starter like that, shorting the two heavy terminals would only get the starter turning and not engage it.

1) Can you turn the engine by the flywheel screen by hand? 2) What is the engine model and spec number from the white tag. 3)Is there more than 1 fuse? Is there a small solenoid below the carburetor and can you hear or feel a click when the key is switched from off to on? One other thing- is the battery hooked up correctly? + to the solenoid?

He said the starter isn't engaging the flywheel, the engine isn't turning, so until that's resolved, fuel isn't an issue in the troubleshooting chain of events.
