Great link. Very interesting. It looks like it is more applicable to large tractors that do a lot of one type of activity. Those of us with compact/utitlity tractors do so many different activities that it would be quite hard to ballast and inflate to maximize traction and minimize compaction in all of those circumstances. The use of a FEL requires so much ballast on the rear of the tractor, probably more than is necessary than for pulling a disk or plow. But, there are certainly lessons to be learned there. I know it doesn't cover all areas of traction I have a tractor that is four wheel drive and four wheel steer. but it does not articulate or oscillate .I use my Ingersoll Rand BL370 mostly as a loader and a backhoe. I believe the best way for me to improve traction would be tire design or air pressure. I can add weight by filling the loader bucket or by picking up something with the backhoe, to improve traction is certain applications. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. My tractor is a dedicated compact tlb. David.

It does point out how complicated a simple thing like traction can be. According to the article R4s can sometimes outpull ags....
Many years back I was helping my dad get a field ready by pulling a set of discs behind my Jimmy. It had a 4spd with a manual throttle. I found that in 2wd I could set the thottle to maintain about 2000rpm but if I engaged 4wd the rpm jumped to 2500 without touching the throttle. Same load, just less rolling resistance.
