Track Tension

I got out the frozen bolts which were holding broken bracket. Now I need to get the de-headed bolts out which are on the inside. These de-headed bolts apparently had their head torn off when the outside bracket broke. It would be easier if I could remove the spring assembly. I think the spring is fully uncompressed but how do I make sure?

Dozers are sooooo much fun especially when something breaks.

When I first bought my dozer, I used a straight 2x4 and lay it on top of my tracks. Then I measured down from the board to the low spot in the track. I don't remember what it is supposed to be on my track any more, but know what it looks like to keep it there, give or take a bit.

I also use the board{straight edge} as a guide for adjusting the tracks.
