skipro3 --> I don't think so. I think it is the rating of the trailer. Thus if I register the trailer as 12K then I have to have a non-commerical class A.
If I register at 9K then I don't need any special license.

Just a special note. I talked to a fellow today. He was pulling a gooseneck with a F250. CHP pulled him over. He didn't have a class A license. The big problem came in when he actually registered the truck. The rating for the truck was 8K. Thus he was 6K over. When all was said and done with the fines, fees, and .50cent a lb over weigth his total ticket was $7300.00.
That makes that class A license not look to bad to me. OACH!!!

In New Hampshire you are suppose to have any trailer with brakes inspected each year. Check your local laws.

I hold a class A commercial license and the only thing I have to do is my medical card every 2 years unless you hold a has mat. I can not say I am not behind this law. There have been way to many large campers that have gone over & into the woods from people having no idea of what they are doing

Just curious, where or how was the truck registered before? Is this some guy that got nailed moving to CA?

It is an ATI grapple I bought through Kubota. I am using a diverter. I have yet to install it. Sadly it is still strapped to a pallet. I have had very little time this year for my tractor aside from cutting fields and moving hay to the barn

I am not sure of the full details, but he told me the truck was registered for 8K. He said something about when you register the truck you need to declare the additional weight which wasn't done.
I personally thought that truck were fixed regarding weight.
The truck was from California and registered in California.
As was expected he was none to happy. It did not sound like the issue that he didn't have a class A license was too big of a deal. According to him the rating of the truck was not enough for the trailer.

Are you you using the trailer for agriculture use or just hauling a tractor or such?

It is an "If" and "and" thing.
It is about weight CAPACITIES, not ACTUAL weights.

IF the trailer has a GVW of over 10,000 lbs.
AND the Combination GVW is over 26,000 lbs
THEN you need a class A.

I think that a 12,000 trailer behind a 1 ton picky-up (also typically 12,000) does NOT require a Class A.
The 1 ton picky-up just on it's own DOES require a medical card, whether it is a duallie or SRW.
That is the over 10,000 GVW rule.

I guess some 3/4 ton puck-ups at around 9900 GVW might be able to haul a 12K trailer, you would have to check the particular vehicle for it's tow rating - and of course it's payload capacity if it is a 5th wheel or gooseneck, since it "carries" one end of the trailer.
In this case and for private non-commercial use you almost certainly do NOT need a class A or a medical card.

Disclaimer; The above is my OPINION, based somewhat on knowledge, life experiences and language skills.
Your's are probably different, which may lead you to different opinions and conclusions.
Yes - I know about the puck-up typo, I decided to leave it (-:

And I'm pretty sure it's the opposite;
It's about weights and not about capacities. No way it's illegal to tow a 3000 lb trailer empty that is rated to 12K with a pick up truck. I talked to my CHP buddy and he said that's why they carry scales in their rigs; the type that each tire rolls up on. So they can weigh the load on each tire, add it up and come to a total.
