I have noticed a lot of people with FEL have a toothbar. Where can I buy some for my Kioto DK40se FEL (KL401)? How well does it dig in virgin ground - both in clay or hard soil?

Here's a few places to take a look. I don't know price unless the site lists. These are in no particular order. I don't have one but the members that do advise that they work very well compared to the buckets cutting edge. The last one is slightly different than the standard toothbar but a member recently purchased and advised it also works well.

I didnt look at all of them links, but just incase they dont list prices, they are ~$300-$400 delivered.

You can also just buy individual bolt on teeht and bolt them directly to your bucket if you are handy. That will bring it under $100 but doesnt give the extra support of the second cutting edge. That said, this is still the route I went. I have had no issues at all, allthough my loader is a bit weaker than yours.

A tooth-bar will make a world of differacne for digging with the bucket.

I personally think Toothbars are a bit overrated by the TBN set. Yes they are absolutely useful and even necessary for real digging but who digs with an FEL except occasionally. FELs are more commonly used to move not dig material and the toothbar can get in the way for that. Someone who is serious about digging should look into a boxblade or backhoe or even a grapple depending on what you need to dig.

I had a toothbar on my first tractor but rarely found it necessary and almost never was it used if I could use that backhoe or grapple instead.

I don't want to be too negative as there are times a toothbar is useful but at $300 it is fairly expensive considering the limited use especially compared with a grapple or boxblade each costing more but far more powerful tools.

I think most guys get them because they are in absolute terms cheaper than other implements but feel most would be better off putting the money towards one of the other earth moving devices.

I have done a LOT of digging with my FEL. (before I got the backhoe).

It just depends on what you want to do. I dug my goldfish pond with the FEL. It is ~ 12' x 20' x 4' deep.

I have also dug a new ditch with it to dry up the from of my property. It actually works suprisingly well for ditching.

Dug up several stumps as well. Sure, it takes longer than a backhoe, but when a FEL is all you got.....A boxblade isnt going to be much help with that.

And also dug a 5' x 5' x2' deep hole in VERY hard packed dry ground for a neighbor to transplant a tree. Tree wasnt very big, but the dirt was poor. So he wanted it big enough to get a P/U load of good topsoil to give the tree a good bed.

These are just some of the things you can dig with a FEL. Sure, a backhoe would be better for most of them. But...these are just ocassional things that most cannot justify renting or buying a BH for, and the teeth make a world of difference:thumbsup:

I find the toothbar a great addition to the FEL and is just another option/tool in the toolbox. I take it off in the winter so I can use the FEL bucket for snow removal.
I bought mine from Iowa Farm Equipment and it was about $375 delivered for a 72". The toothbar also reinforces the front lip and mine has been well used and is no worse for the wear.

I don't disagree that much except that for something like a pond I would have simply used the boxblade with scarifiers down to loosen the soil and drag it into piles which could then be very easily picked up with a naked bucket. I can drive the tractor with boxblade around a lot faster than operate the FEL to dig. The toothbar is really important only to break up the soil and in most cases you can use the boxblade to do that. If the boxblade collects a mound of material it is easier to get a full bucket of spoils than it is when digging primarily with the toothbar/bucket in my experience. Hard to fill up a bucket at that same time that you are breaking up the ground with the toothbar.

Again, I'm not saying toothbars are useless just that I think they are a bit overrated here.

I use it to scrape up the brush.
