I'm looking for guidance on a tooth bar for my DK45S. My immediate need is removing quite a few pine saplings that are too big for a bush hog.

A conventional tooth bar (like W.R.Long) and the Piranha bar are about the same cost. The Piranha is supposed to be great for removing brush but it just seems that the long teeth on a conventional tooth bar would be better for getting under roots and jerking them up.

But that's just theory and speculation on my part. So I'd like to hear opinions from folks that have actually used one or both of these. Thanks.

I see the advantage to my Piranha's as getting brush, brambles, small trees JUST below the surface. I don't expect them to work well in rocky soils. But I've about 400 acres in Mississippi and Virginia with NO rocky soils and only 75 acres in Vermont with SOME rocky soils, (which I have not gotten the tractors to yet).

I have the Piranda for my 45se but for trees a narrow digging bucket that is made for tree roots would be much better. The Piranda works fine for small cedar trees and wet soil.

I have to agree with this... a regular bucket (with any kind of bar) is not the best choice for getting under roots and prying them up. A 'stump bucket' would be a better choice, I think.

Like this 'tree spade': Tree Spade

A regular bucket is too wide, you have to make really BIG holes to dig up each sapling. And you have to be real careful to only use the exact center of the bucket or you can twist the loader arms.

Faced the same dilemma as you a few months ago. I decided on a Tisco 72" tooth bar (essentially same design as the W.R. Long), rather than the Piranha, based on the same reasoning. But I've never used the Piranha, so take that for what it's worth. I also figured the conventional teeth would be a bit better for more aggressive digging in hard ground.

I tried using my ratchet rake for removing pine saplings but it's not effective as the tap roots are too deep...It breaks the tree off about 1-2 feet from the ground and strips the bark. Now I wrap a chain twice around each pine at the base and hook the chain to the tow bar and pull them out of the ground one at a time. The ratchet rake works pretty good though for other saplings with shallow roots.
