Tools, Parts, and Pieces for BIY'ers

Good site, thanks. I recently learned we had a Fastenal locally, not sure how long it has been open but I was looking for a part at the local farm supply store and they referred me to Fastenal so I drove over there excitedly after learning we had one close by. I had never been in one
.
They have some items I wouldn't be able to get locally anywhere else but their prices floored me. I had just bought a piece of 3' angle iron for $15 locally at another place and since I was in there, I looked to see what they wanted for the same thing...about $70! The same Chinese made shackles and hooks that I get at HF were 2 1/2 times more expensive there.

Our particular Fastenal doesn't have much on the floor either but it is in a small building. The vast majority of their stock being specialty fasteners and a pretty standard nut/bolts selection, which is fine but I just don't see them staying open very long in our area.

I have to say, my limited experience with fastenal was not very good.

I have a Wholesale Tool local to me.
That's a big disadvantage to me since I can't go in there and just get what I went after. "What you have those really strong magnets? Well give me half a dozen" or "why is this really nice dead blow hammer sitting up here? Fifty bucks? Well I shouldn't but now I think I really need it." They haven't printed any new catalogs, citing the bad economy, so the prices in the old catalog will be increased in some cases, usually not too much. The website is current of course.

I've only been in the one in this area once, and I agree; their prices were a shock.:eek: However, they didn't have what I was looking for anyway, so it didn't cost me anything.:D

IMO Fastenal is one of them shops that is "YMMV" when it comes to pricing....its either that or EVERYONE else around me is WAYY high priced. I get all my fasteners, cutoff wheels, steel, and pretty much everything I buy which is construction/industrial/ag related there for less then it costs anywhere else.
It wasnt always like that...once you become known as a regular customer and you get setup with an account, prices become much better.

The store is pretty much a nut & bolt store, but once you get the catalog...its amazing to find out what they carry....and most if not all of it is available next day or 2 days...

Spud- Guess I don't understand: What's "YMMV"? All I could think of was "You Make Me Vomit"! Where do you get all your stuff? WTTool, or Fastenal? Sorry for being 'slow'! :D ~Scotty

Scotty, I guess I'm slow, too. I had to look it up and apparently YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary.:D

Thanks Bird, how crude of me! But, looking around, I can't believe the disparity in prices on the 'net'. Bearings that I'd looked for, (need four), $30 ea at a supplier, $12- each on ebay. OK, OK ...e-bay, that's not fair! But, it sure pays to 'surf'! ~S

I think your all wrong... It stands for Your Money Making Vendor. I visited my local fastenal for some grade 5 fasteners in metric. Didn't have them but had regular grade for more than I paid John Deere for their grade 5s.

Dave;
Residents of the east coast are used to paying more because they live in a high class area. Not the same as the cost of living in the mid west.

I went to Fastenal to find a Ground Rod driver for my SDS Max drill. Nobody in town carries them, but I was told they might. They told me that they could overnight me a DeWalt model for $95 plus shipping. I told them I'd keep looking since I knew that Ebay had them for around $60, but I was in a hurry and wanted it right away. Contractor Building Supply told me they could order me a Bosch model for $65 plus shipping and have it overnight. I'll take Bosch over DeWalt any day, and when it's $30 less, it's a no brainer.
