Hi all, I'm new to TractorByNet and still pretty new to tractor ownership. I have a 1951 Ford 8n I am about to do some restoration on. I have never done anything like this, but I am excited to try. Regarding prepping the tractor for repainting, I know degreasing and cleaning, followed by stripping rust and loose paint are among the important steps... but I was wondering if there are particular tools you use for the job. Specifically, I was wondering if there are power tools (sanders, etc.) that could help make the process easier and a little less labor intensive. This is a new adventure for me, so any input from you veteran tractor restorers is welcome.

Welcome, as I am sure someone will chime in with excellent information for you, I wanted to comment and say that the ford 8n is an awesome tractor. It too was my first tractor and I recently bought a new kubota. You can do so much with that 60 yr old machine it is amazing. Sorry for the off topic comment but I couldn't help it, I miss my 8n… only good thing is it went to a good friend and I can stop and see it when I want lol

Some paint stripper like air craft remover will work good for the sheet metal and maybe the engine and trans. A wire wheel on a grinder works good for some things like knocking lose paint of the cast parts. A sand blast cabinet is nice for small parts.
