Tiller too much tiller?

Dan, I have a 52" Woods brand tiller which I use with my JD4100 (20 HP, 17 PTO HP). It works just fine, and powerwise I can't hardy even feel it load down when I drop it into the ground. Your larger tractor should handle the 60" model no problem. One other thing -if you run into some hard ground that does give you trouble, then just go over the ground with a subsoiler (ripper) or moldboard plow before you till.

I can't talk about the appropriateness of the 60" on a b2710 ... but the first thing I bought for my L3710 was a 72" KingKutter tiller. Great investment as far as I'm concerned. I was a little worried that it might be too large ... but I did 3 acres with nary a problem. I learned to calculate when I had more than 50 feet of electric fence wire wrapped on the tines (not once but twice ... don't try to get too close to the fence is what I learned) - and I learned that it takes a lot longer to cut pull and yank the wire out of there.
The 3710 had enough power to let me do the max depth in one pass in the clay/sand (and rocks) micture in my fields.
I'm waiting for the grass to grow in that pasture so I can do the rest ... but I can assure you that the tiller is quite sturdy ... great weight back there when you're using the loader ... and ... I found out to my shock when I zoomed into the garage ... it also lowers your height somewhat ... I now have to replace the upper door trim (and fold the rops when I drive in and out)

Thanks for the continued info and responses.I've had the pleasure of using my new tiller a couple of times and now realize how tough they really are.I've hit a good number of various sized roots,rocks and other unidentified "stuff" and stalled the tractor doing so(not good for the drive train).I knew this wasn't supposto happen because the tiller pto has a slip clutch-obviously it wasn't working so I loosened the spring nuts and allowed it to break-free(they must freeze/rust up if not used frequently)on the next till.Anyway the thing works well now and I'm very pleased with the results.By the way,does anybody know what one of these kingkutter TG-60's weighs ? -just curious because my 3pt doesn't lift it until near the end of its range-my kubota dealer says this is "normal" probably due to its weight.Thanks, Dan.

The literature I have from King Kutter II says the TG-60-Y approximate weight is 690. And I wouldn't argue with your dealer, but when you say your 3-point doesn't lift it until near the end of it's range, I can't help but wonder if the implement isn't so tall that the lift arms are simply not going all the way down when you push the lever all the way down. When you do lift it as high as it will go, then start forward with the lever very slowly and see if the implement doesn't go all the way down to the ground before the lever is all the way down. For example, if the implement is on the ground, or as deep in the ground as it's going to go, when the lever is halfway forward, then pushing the lever all the way forward doesn't lower the implement any more, and when you pull back on the lever, it isn't going to start to pick up the implement until you get back to that halfway point (or whatever point you were at when the implement stopped moving downward). Whew, does anyone understand what I'm trying to say?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif In other words, I'm not convinced the weight has anything to do with where it starts to lift.

P.S. DanB, if you decide that King Kutter is too heavy for your B2710, I'll trade you a much lighter 40" tiller for it and I'll use it on my B2710./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Hey Bird,I understand what you're saying about the 3pt and its a good idea-you're right about the height of the tiller-it is taller than most of my other implements.I tried the 3pt lever with nothing on the lift arms and it starts to lift at about # 3-how does yours compare ?.when I get the time I'm going to try hanging the tiller over a small incline and try your suggestion.As for the trade you mentioned-I think I'll pass!!.you can get one of these tillers at tractor supply (I know you're well acquainted with them!)for $1000.00-cheaper than buying from a kk dealer.Dan.

Dan, I kinda learned about that from experience, but I haven't paid any attention to just when mine will start to lift with nothing on it (and I just got through taking the loader and box blade off and putting the finish mower on). And when I saw one of the King Kutter tillers at Tractor Supply was when I ordered the sales brochures on their implements that has the weight lifted.

I have been using a 48inch King Kutter tiller on a B-2100 and so far it works great. I think the tractor could handle a 60 inch with out any problems. The tiller is very heavy but I think that helps keep it from bouncing around in my rocky ground. I used a moldboard plow first and this seems to help keep the tiller from bouncing on the rocks, the ground gives way when the tines hit rocks. I know that my tractor with turf tires and FEL will not pull the tiller unless I am in 4WD. In my rocky ground I have been running the tractor at about 2100 rpm and it works very nice.

DanB, when I was changing implements this morning, I did a little experimenting I hadn't done before. When I lower the 3-point all the way, the center of the pins are about 9 inches off the ground (actually a concrete floor) and when I ease back on the lever, the 3-point doesn't start to rise until about #4, i.e., half way back on the lever before it starts up. I was a little surprised, but since it's always seemed to have its full range of movement, I'd just never noticed where it started.
