Chuck:
Can't ever recall having seen pickled okra in the store up here but will look a whole lot harder now that I know its out there.

Egon

Egon, okra is definitely a hot weather plant (originally from Africa), so I'm not surprised you don't have it. And it's different in a lot of ways. Handling the raw pods and touching the plants causes severe itching for a lot of people. I have a neighbor who grows it every year, but won't cut it without wearing gloves and a long sleeved shirt. And my wife wears rubber gloves when she handles it. I don't wear gloves, have a little mild itching when I'm cutting it, but it disappears shortly after I finish and wash my hands. And yet you can eat it raw without causing any oral itching. And the pods grow so fast that you need to cut it every other day, and it'll continue producing all summer.

Amen to that. It can compete with zuchini sometimes.

Bird:

As soon as I can get a decent garden plot going I'll plant some. It should grow here in Nova Scotia. The garden plot needs some working to eliminate the grass, shrubs and weeds and a deer fence. There is winter rye planted on it right now and maybe next spring I'll till it under for green manure. My biggest problem is we must make a trip to Alberta in May just when its farmin time.

Egon

Egon, don't forget to let us know how it does. I've found that I can plant it early if I want to; it just takes a long time to come up and grows very, very slowly until warm weather arrives, then it takes off. It's been a long time since I bought any, so I don't know what the grocery stores get for it, but when I was 12-14 years old, that was my money crop. I'd start out early in the year selling it to the grocery stores for $.35 a pound and by late summer, the price would be down to $.05 a pound./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
