We had over 2" of liquid precipitation that fell last night. Looks like an inch or so froze and stuck. I would have MUCH preferred waking up to 20" than this mess.

You can keep the ice Inspector. But I'd sure like to get my hands on that Red Cedar! Beautiful color and wonderful smelling wood. Glad you got the mess cleaned out of the way before your guests arrive.

Geez inspector !! You make me glad I planted my pines away from the drive. I have a bunch of small limbs to deal with , but nothing like yours. Have fun burning the multiple yule logs......Stay safe while cleaning up.......Tom

Is red cedar a good burning wood? Growing up I only remember using maple, oak and ash in our fireplace and wood stove ( what we had available). We are clearing a lot and it is full of red cedar that we could burn in our fire ring at the lake.

No. Cedar's a soft wood, so not much good for burning (for heat anyway).

We had an a massive ice storm here in '98. I was without power for nearly a month, which seems crazy in this day and age. We are still cleaning up the mess it left behind.

I had a amazing time then though, it was one big adventure.

I think they have some silly set of guidelines they use to determine what level it is, but I don't know for sure what they are. But usually a Level 1 is snow/ice on the roads. Travel if you need to but be careful. Level 2 is driving is discouraged to allow the road guys to work their magic, but if you HAVE to go out, be careful. Level 3 the roads are a true mess. And no one other than Emergency personnel or/Doctors/Nurses, etc. can be caught on the roads. ANy one else faces ARREST. The County Sheriff determines the level.

I did get out to town today. The destruction this ice has caused is amazing, or breath taking, however you look at it.

Yep we had same FREEZING RAIN but over about 16" of snow, Mansfield got 20~24" snow with just a bit of sleet on top. I wrecked my truck going to work level 2 in richland co. right on ashland richland line. farm isin ashland got more ice. just east of I71, mansfield just west of I71. farther west my niece got 24" + and ice on top too...

Inspector - - thanks for the answer. You'd laugh if you saw the mess the little snow & sleet we had yesterday caused. We have many elevated roadways & bridges - - yesterday's weather created havoc. Major interstates & other highways were closed for a while. Lot's of folks over at a family member's house for Christmas got excited that they could not get home if they waited till late, so it seems everyone hit the roads to get home early. Caused some major traffic tie ups. Nasty way to spend the end of Christmas day.

Luckily, I got to stay inside in front of the wood stove.

This is a fine example of the 2 ice storms I can remember back in 1991 and again in 2001 where I was out of power for a long time (Days). When I built the house last year I put in a transfer breaker box to battle issues like this. It's hard on you mentally to make it without power for long periods of time.

As Bird said, that's what we are more likely to get than all that white "stuff". About 2 years ago, a storm like like shut Dallas down for 1-1/2 days. Traffic was backed up for 20 miles trying to get through. I was stuck in the middle of it in a F350 dually with mud tires and I COULD move but had no place to go because of all the cars and trucks that had spun out and blocked the overpasses. What a nightmare.

My wife was stuck in the house because a tree had come down and blocked the drive right at the gate. She said the noise of breaking and falling limbs kept her awake all night. Bless her, she had it nearly all cleared up before I got home. When it gets as bad as that, we usually lose power too, not for more than a couple of days though.

All I can say is that you've never seen Texans drive in a little snow and ice. I lived in Dallas for 13 years and the slightest bit of frozen precipitation in the morning and I'd either get in to work before anyone else hit the road or I'd stay home until it melted. I was brought up driving in that stuff but their attitude is, "I did 70 mph on this road yesterday and, darn it, I'm going to do 70 on it today". It's like bumper cars at the fair. It gets really, really dangerous.

Heh. I actually have family in the Dallas area and there was a snow/ice storm the last time I was there in the winter (January '03). I had to chuckle at all the mayhem.

Glad to hear everything turned out OK, I guess you don't have your generator hooked up yet? I will have one before next winter, I've already told Monica I'm not going through what some of the folks did/are. We were lucky, we didn't lose power and the ice wasn't as bad as what it was in Columbus. But wait till I post pictures of what happened when we tried to swap propane tanks after the thaw. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
