Eric. If it's dry enough to mow why not spray now? What are you spraying?

Because thunderstorm were coming in that evening. About and hour after I finished mowing it started raining. I hate to spray and have rain that night or next day. I try to always have two sunny days and spray the first day. I want to spray to kill weeds that try to come up along the fence line. Thanks for turning me upright Xfaxman. Maybe I will get the hang of posting pics before summer is over. It took me a little bit to get this pasture clean and green KevT. The journey of 3000 miles starts with one step. Stick with it and you will get there. I have another pasture I'm working on now. I think we have picked up 2 dump truck loads of rocks in it. They were everywhere. Also have several bush piles to burn. It just takes time.

Eric, are you using a rotary cutter or bush hog for cutting your field?

Oh crap, your right , I had to stop typing for a minute to change my sons tv show, meant to say finish mower or rotary cutter. Thanks for catching that.

Ok, thought maybe I was missing something.

Countrybumpkin you had me when I started reading. I use a 6' finish mower to make two passes on the inside of my fence. Outside the fence by the road is mowed with Zero turn mower. The two passes on the inside keeps the fence clean looking even when the pasture growns up a bit. If it looks like bush hog is is because my blades are dull. Big shame. Not put my sharpened set on yet. The rest of the pasture I usually cut for hay. When I first got the pasture cleaned up and grass going good I bought a 15' batwing finish mower and kept the entire pasture mowed with it. It looked like a golf course. But it just takes to much time to keep it all mowed that close. I still have request from friends and neighbors for me to mow it like that again. I might later, but just don't have the time at the moment.

Thanks, I completely understand, that's why I was asking what you used , I'm trying to decide what to do with some of mine. I have about 12 acres I may cut for hay in the next few years but until then was planning on keeping it mowed down. I thought about a large finish mower but really don't want to have to keep it mowed every week , so I'm looking at running my rotary cutter across it maybe once a month just to keep it under a foot tall.

Some finish mowers can actually be set to a rather high height. As long as the terrain isn't going to beat it up I'd go for the finish mower. Rotary cutters do okay on grass when the blades have a fresh edge, but their edges are made more squared than a traditional mower blade so they can shatter brush and saplings. They do not provide a good cut on grass for long. The squared edge isn't angled well for grass cutting and gets rounded by the grass rapidly. With 12 acres I'd venture to guess you could take a brand new rotary cutter out there and would be able to tell a difference in the quality of cut between the beginning and the end by examining the blades of grass... Ones at the beginning would be a more uniform length and have straighter "cuts" on the ends and the end of the 12 acres would be more random in height and the ends would be torn rather than cut. Such a situation can result in uneven "yellowing" and a "patchy" look to the field.
