I think this qualifies as a possible project.

Was asked today if i was interested in relocating to Pittston, PA.
Any members on here from this neck of the woods ? Need advice. This would be a big relocation. Cost of living? real estate ? Taxes? Would need about 10 acres.

You do't have a location listed. Are you being asked to move a couple of towns away, a couple of states, west coast to there, or from another country?

I'm from Orangeville, about 50 miles South West of Pittston. Not sure what info I can give you but welcome to the neighborhood. I like it hear in the northeast. Property of that size shouldn't be too hard to find.

Thanks for replies, what does land go for per acre. I am just mulling over possibly relocating there. I currently in the South Central US. Job location is in Pittston.

Its difficult to say, one of the things about acreage is that the nat. gas boom has made more people hold on to their land in hopes of getting money down the road. OR they are selling the land but keeping the lease. Its something to watch. Also if you look at the map and move more towards moscow you are hitting the NYC commuters which drove up property prices for a bit. I really cant tell you pay this per acre it kind of depends on the area, if the property is farm or wooded, etc.

I am from that area. Born and raised in Wilkes Barre and lived in Plains for 16 years also in Pittston for a year. Land used to be dirt cheap now the price has gone up. The starting point out of town 3 k ac can be found and there are allot of old farms for sale that can be had at 100 k and up. The valley used to be a very quiet area but that changed in the mid 90's . There was and still is a big influx from ny and nj . I moved out to the country 13 years ago and love it. Cost of living isn't bad and the taxes are low here. Luzerne county just had a reassessment 3 yrs ago so no worries in the near future. Lots of property for sale in my area people move up to the mountain and find it a rough commute in the winter and sell after a year or two. If you have any questions pm me. Good luck. There is a house up the road from me for sale 32 ac 175,000.

3 k per acre, thats cheap, land in Ia, and SD is going for around 10k per acre. High corn and soybean prices have driven it up, tractors and equipt are very high also. Old farmes are being torn down and large wooded areas, are being bulldozed, to farm.

Yes land is cheap in certain areas. But 5 or 10 mi away it's going for 20 k an acre in the new developments. Go figure move out to the country to live in a small city like environment. Oh well to each his own.

I'm another one who may be moving due to a job change. Like the OP, I always check real estate taxes and costs of living.
One thing we've pretty much decided that if we do move (it'll be West Virginia or possibly Vermont for us), we'll rent for a period of time to ensure that the job is stable and it's a good fit for both my wife and I.
Things I've used a lot was the Craigslist real estate listings. I've also used both Wikipedia and Google Maps to determine locations and information about the area.

If at all possible, I suggest the OP (Timberland) and his/her spouse spend a few days in the Pittston area.I like Scranton (we had relatives there a few years ago). Seems like that's a cold and windy area in the winter...be prepared for that.
