To rebuild or not to rebuild this old engine?

No, not like the picture.

That crank is sealed by the oil pan. On a deep skirt design, the block extends down past the crank center line by inches. The throw on a 172 is contained within the skirts.

I'll see if I can scare up a pictue. Or Mr Coulton Oregon can post one....

I rebuilt heads 2 years ago.

valves grinding: 3 Euro per valve.
face grinding the heads: 10 euro per head (3 individual heads on the 5245)
gasket: 10 euro per piece.

total cost about 75 Euro.

if the valve guides are ok, you could polish the valve seats with a suction cup on a stick, with coarse and fine polish, as most auto shops sell. (at least, here in Holland.)

If there are no nasty ridges in the liners, restore the cross hatch with a hone stone, and put in new rings.
Carbon buildup in the piston ring grooves can be dissolved with brake fluid. (in fact you can free up stuck pistons of old engines with it that sat for years)

If the liners are NOT ok, and this engine is a parent bore block, (non replaceable liners) like the 3.3, 4,4 and 6,6 liter tractor engines, you must seriously concider if you go with this block or find another engine.
