Man Ticketed for Warming Up Car in his Own Driveway - Lauren Fix - YouTube

Yes, Warm Your Damn Car Up If It's Cold

Guy at work said dont idle you car it will ruin the engine when it's down near 0 or below, something about gas runs down the cylinder walls, diluting the oil, burn up the main bearings, waste gas......bla bla bla.... I was more interested in getting the frost to run off the windshield. So to stop this bad practice, let give people tickets, stop selling remote car starters, and slap the car thief on the wrist with a wet noodle, what they do 150 years ago with horse thief's............

You can't drive with ice on the windows, I tried. You need to warm it up enough to see, for sure.

If the car sat out even at -20F I would start it and if I could see alright I would go within half a minute of warming, slowly. I would putter for a couple miles provided traffic would allow that option. By them I would go the speed limit and the car will warm up quickly.

The car will idle a long time and still never really get warm without working it.

Do not idle a direct injected motor with a high pressure fuel system. It will do just like your friend said. If it's port, heui, common rail, etc..Idle away.

He actually got ticketed for leaving the keys in the car and the doors unlocked. Idling was the excuse for the cop to check the car.

So to be legal has to lock the doors while the car warms up. Then call AAA when it is warm because he has locked keys in car.

Or you lock the doors and keep a separate remote to unlock the doors with that way somebody can't just open the door and walk off with it.

When I worked in Northern Alberta Canada, trucks at the jobsite ran 24 hours a day, idling when not in use for hours at a time. Never did any damage to them.

My Jeep has a chip in the key. That being said, I have a spare key that will only unlock the locks, but will NOT run the engine.
It is in a 'hide a key' magnetic box hidden on the vehicle outside the passenger compartment.
