What was the ongoing joke about the way the Lone Ranger and his faithful indian sidekick addressed one another? I actually leaned this in an undergraduate class years ago (Who says college is a waste? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

I remember the Indian was Tonto and he called the Lone Ranger "Kemo-sabe". There have been several jokes about the relationship of these two...none I remember are printable on this site.

Really curious how this plays out...

I don't know the joke, but:

The name "Tonto" was picked by Fran Striker from a Zane Grey title "Stranger From the Tonto" and means "wild one."

Kemo Sabe" (originally spelled Kee-mo Sah-bee) was the name of a boy's summer camp in Michigan owned by an uncle of the shows director, James Jewell.

This and other trivia about the Lone Ranger can be found at this site.

Bill,

Your answer sounds better than mine. I was told by a professor in a college Spanish class that it was a running gag in Spanish.

Tanto (or some close derivative thereof) means 'stupid' while Kemosabe was "Que no sabe" meaning 'He who knows nothing' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That reminds of something I recently heard on the Westerns channel. They do little info blurbs in between movies. It seems that on some of the 60's movies that when they hired Native Americans to play indians when speaking in their native tongue for the camera they were actually telling dirty jokes. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Dave
