Ferguson TO 30
I have a to 30 that won't stay running. It will run with choke out but as soon as you push the choke in it dies did a rebuild on the carburetor but to no avail it still won't stay running so any thoughts would be helpful. Also I brought this tractor this way you can tell it sat out for a awhile

Thanks

Richard

have you adjusted the jet on the side of the carb? Open or close it a turn and see what happens. Sounds like it need opening.

Have you checked the fuel sediment bowl? Perhaps you have dirt in that and re dirtied the carb?

Is the rebuild a recent one? It sounds very much like a carb that is gummed up by bad gas.

If that's not the issue, then I'd say that you did something wrong in the carb rebuild...maybe unable to get things cleaned from bad gas.

Did you remove the elbow strainer where the fuel line attaches to the carb. ?? There is a fine mesh screen attached to that el, that is the last filtration of fuel before going into the bowl. A can of Carb cleaner should clean it up, if that is the problem. Flush from the screen part, out, & some air using a low pressure air blow gun to follow up. If you did remove & clean, you may try removing, and having a look at the discharge nozzle. There are a couple of tiny cross drilled holes in it, that can get plugged pretty easy, causing those symptoms. Plucking a single wire from a wire brush makes a good cleaning tool, or a strand of copper wire from some automotive type wire works well too.

If both check out OK, and it still acts the same way, could be a possibility of the intake gasket leaking, not drawing in air/fuel ratio properly. But I'm really leaning towards the two items mentioned first. Just soaking will not do it. Remove the el, and have a good look at it. If it's clean, check the discharge nozzle.

There may not be a strainer there. I never had one on my TO30...didn't know there ever was one there.

The parts book shows one being there.

take the bowl back off, inside the base is the main jet, take it out and run some air thru but also run a thin wire thru the center of the jet to make sure that stubborn particle is dislodged, reinstall and good to go

I never had a parts book even though i did a complete overhaul of the engine a few years back.

Most likely the guy who had it before me didn't have the book either.

I don't doubt that there is supposed to be one there. Mine looks as if someone used an elbow fitting there somewhere in the past 60 years. If mine has run all that time without one, I don't guess that I'll put one in. :)

I changed all of the gas strainer but what DJ 54 said about the discharge valve has me thinking about that I remember seeing those holes and they where plugged so iam going to tear into it again make sure those holes are clean. The rebuild was done yesterday

Thanks again
Richard
