I was told at pt in Tazwell that the reason for the valve stems on both sides of the tires was that they use these tires on some models that use dual wheels and that having stems on both sides made it easier to gauge the tires and to add air if needed.

Ride like a truck?

Not to worry - Speed limit = 5mph /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I took Ed up on his offer to sell his extra set of wheels with bar treads. Thanks Ed. That gives me 4 spares which should see me through for a while. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Before stacking them in the barn, I measured the rims using instructions I found at the OTR Wheel Engineering site in case it might be useful sometime.

Where to mount the spare tire rack? Got it! As a back bumper to protect the probably needed oil cooler inlet filter from the trees I'm always backing into. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the reason the valve stems are on both sides is so the tire-wheel can be reversed, to widen the tread with. if you take one off you can see it is made with seats for the lug nuts on both sides.i ask terry if you can reverse them and he said no the wheel motors would not take the extra load

Good question. I don't know, either, but my little simplicity tractor has them, too. )</font>

David,

Do you have a little Simplicity? I never knew? What do you use it for?

We have a 1969ish Simplicity Yeoman 726. It was my father's. He bought it from the original owner around 1985 for $600.00. It came with a 26" three bladed mower deck, a snow blade, a snow thrower and a rear weight. I used it from 1995 until 2001, when we bought the Power Trac. It has a 3sp tranny. Reverse is kind of weird, in that is is geared the same as 3rd! So you can go real fast backwards. It has an electric starter, but no charging system. So I just pull start it when the battery dies... Starts right up. I can even pull start it while sitting in the seat.

It originally had a 6HP Briggs, which died after 29 years of service(remember that commercial with the old guy, "Change the oil every year... I never had my oil changed!"). So they wedged in a 8.5HP. I still use it once or twice a year, just for fun. It does a great job mowing with a most beautiful cut, but takes forever becasue of the 26" deck. Nice thing was it could fit through a gate, and to install the mower deck, I just lift the tractor front end up and walk it over the deck and set it down.

I took the kids for a hay ride with it yesterday. We have one of those Rubbermaid carts, so we drove 75 feet back to the garden, piled in our harvest of 12 small pumpkins and 31 watermellons(each about the size of a softball) and I drove them all over the yard at a very slow speed. They had a blast and so did I. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was thinking about the idea that the extra weight of the foam filled tires would over load the wheel motors, the wheels don't ride on the wheel motors, the wheel motors ride on the wheels the extra weight of the foam filled tires would be on the ground not on the wheel motors. Now it might take a little more power to get the foam filled tires rolling. As far as the dual wheels on the 425 I can see where they would put extra strain on the wheel motors if you were in a situation where the weight of the machine was just on the outside tires and the inside tires off the ground. Now having the extra weight of the foam filled tires or the dual wheels would put extra strain on the center section when you would lift loads heavier than it normally would lift without lifting the backend off the ground. Just a thought that seems logical to me.

Has anybody found a rim supplier for the 23X10.5X12 tires on my 422. I see PT wants $180 for a spare tire. I put a slit in one of my tires today, and while it does not appear to be leaking I feel the need for a spare. Of course I could just buy a tire. Is it easy to mount one of these tires yourself? I was able to break it from the rim using a high lift jack, but I have not tried to actually remove the tire from the rim and mount another one.

Jol, have carlisle tires on my 14 foot trailer. Have about 1,000 miles on them. Interstate and construction site miles and have not had 1 flat. Not sure about PT use but, I think its something to look into

I would check Rustybore's Tire Store on eBay. I've bought tires from them before and would highly recommend them. I'm pretty sure they have the rims and the tires you're looking for.

The tires on my PT are Titans.

My cost for a full set of shoes
4 each super lug 4 ply
Plus 4 rims to fit the 422/425
Total charged to the credit card including shipping = $428.44

Some other things you might consider, the shortest valve stem you can find, and about a quart of slime in each tire. Bar lugs pointing forward and stem to the outside. good luck

I have purchased tires and rims from Ebay. I also had a wheel and rim place make me up a set for rims to fit my 1445. I think the Ditch Witch uses the same tires and rims.
They are fairly easy to take off and mount new tires, although some of those tires you have to get a tire shop to mount them due to the tire not spreading out enough to seat the edges. The compression belts don't seem to work. If they are full of slim, they are really messy.

I would recommend 6 ply tires.

To everyone - thanks for the information.
JJ - Can I mix the 6 ply with the standard tires. I think 6 ply is a good choice, but I just want a spare. There seems to be a lot of lug left on my tires and I am at around 500 hours on the PT.

I don't see why not. The six ply will allow more weight. It jumps quite a bit over 2 ply.The only way to be sure that all tires have the same rolling distance, is to raise the tire off the ground and use a fiberglass tape around the center, and add or let out air as necessary to give the same measurement.

Take a look at the tires in this pic. I have no problem doing this.

Your 422 must have better tires than my 425

-OR-

Our decomposed granite 'soil' is more abrasive.

After 310 or so hours, the front bar tires have about 1/8" tread, rears 3/16" with a combination of loader work and mini-hoe work.

Bob,

I looked quite a bit for 6-ply Titan Power Trac tires since my PT has 4 ply ones. I couldn't find any. Everyone else I talked to said they'd been discontinued and they could only get 2 and 4 ply rated ones. There's also some confusion since I think Carlisle has now bought Titan or something...

Trying to find 23x10.50x12 6-ply tires of any brand is a challenge. I found one source for Ditch Witch (i.e. trencher) tires at about $150 each. Cedar Rapids Tire has 6-ply Carlisle Super Lugs, but they only have about 60-75% as many lugs as the Power Trac tires. There's also a Chinese 6-ply out there -- but it's metric-sized and I was told by the dealer that it's actually closer in size to a 23x9.50x12.

If you can find Titan Power Trac tires in 6 ply please let us know! Also note that a 4-ply is really a "4-ply rated" tire and may not have four plies (likely only 2 or 3).

My bar tires have less than 50 hrs. on them but I have noticed very little ware on any tires with over 400 hrs on my PT
