On my ATV - some kind of wasp kept laying eggs in the keyhole and filling it with a wax-like substance. Finally, heated the key, jammed it thru the waxy substance and its been there for four + years.

Buy an off-on-start toggle switch and a switch guard from your local automotive supply store and install it

I would just modify the key, I remember one post where someone cut off their key and soldered it into the used brass end of a shotgun shell here is another one of putting it into a knob.

You could just install a protector around the key, my International had something resembling a cup under the nut that secures the switch, so the key is then in a recess. A shallow tin can would do the trick.

I just used a knurled knob I had lying about and cut the key to fit.
Now well out of the way and can be removed...
