Tired of being cold: Best, warmest jacket for farm/tractor work?

That helps for a while, but a raincoat also holds in your body moisture, it can't evaporate, and if you stop moving, it can chill and then you get cold. Its a trade-off depending on how long you're going to be outside.

I understand what you mean by a raincoat holding in your body moisture... which is why I wear my Australian 'Driza-Bone' over a regular jacket or jumper. If you're not familiar with a 'Driza-Bone'; it's a full length (available in 3/4 length too) treated canvas, horse riding, over coat... kind of like a 'duster'. There are even straps to clip around your legs to keep it from flapping around.

Very stylish and practical too.

The Carhart insulated coverall work great, Tractor Supply runs them on sale every so often. Put them on over light clothing and remove the coveralls when you come inside or you will sweat and freeze when you go back outside.

Thick heavy wool socks and a hard hat with liner just finish things off. Throw in some fleece gloves or mitts for the hands and all should be ready.

The snowmobile gear is well worth a look at if your into serious cold.

I've always been partial to the one-piece quilt-lined worksuits when I know I'm going to be out, and its going to be cold all day. I have a set of Walls and Dickies and they have been good. Used to put oil skins/rain gear over them to keep the wet and wind out. They really hold in the warmth. Humidity in the suit, and holding moisture were the drawbacks. If you expect to get wet or work up a sweat, cotton is a terrible choice.
Layers of wool and/or synthetics are nice because you can take off a layer or two. Carhartt used to make a tough synthetic jacket--don't know about heat/flame resistance if you deal with much of that.

I have Gortex insulated coveralls I bought for goose hunting that I wear. Wind and water proof. Absolutely worth the high price I paid for them.

I use a layered approach, and its mostly first ascent gear. They have breathable waterproof overcoats, then down coats, and fleece. Their thermals are awesome too. Life time warranty, send back if not happy they will replace.
If its something that will get trashed, then carhart (they have the new jackets with more swing in the arms) and layer underneath.

Layers.

If it is only so so cold, I just wear a heavy pair of work pants or even cotton overalls with whatever jacket fits the weather.

If it is really cold, I layer up with silk long top/bottom, poly pro long top/bottom, heavy wool pants, shirts, sweater and jacket. The jacket may or may not be wool. Just depends on the cold and if I will get wet.

Funny thing is that one work day, I was out working with the chainsaw and the temperature was in the teens. I was wearing the wool layers but I took off all of the shirts and jackets just leaving me with the silk and poly pro tops. I was still sweating.:shocked: Sweating and Steaming in 18 degree weather. Unreal.

Later,
Dan

If you want a really warm coat and you don't want to wear two or three coats in layers, I would go to a site like Cabelas and get a duck hunting parka. This is for sitting in cold conditions and not moving around a lot. Kind of like sitting on a tractor in my opinion. I've been in the marsh duck hunting kneeling in two feet of water that I had to break the ice to get to where I wanted to be, and then to have the ice form up again around me wearing neoprene chest waders, two layers of really thick wool socks and a good parka over a thermal top and heavy sweatshirt. Plus good gloves and full face mask beaning and heavy hat .

When it's super cold and I'm out in the elements for an extended time, I wear my Berne coveralls and wear my Carhartt arctic hooded jacket over the top of them. Not going to get cold with that setup. Thankfully the amount of time in the elements is less now that we have a cab tractor.

Besides normal underware and socks... I wear thermal underwear covered by a Carhart insulated coverals. Tall Herman Survivor pack boots with the coverall legs bungied down over top the boots so you can wade thru arse deep snow without getting any snow in your boots. Fur Mad Bomber hat with a knit face mask if it is real windy. Heavy thermal glove on right hand and a heavy mitten on the left hand with a heat pack in it. I'm good for hours outside like this, only thing that needs heat is the left hand that only works the speed knob on the steering wheel. Rest of me is toasty, too toasty if I have to do more than work the tractor.
