Tire Valve Stems

/ Tire Valve Stems #21
Good valve stems are made from Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber, or EPDM for short. It's a synthetic rubber. China is making cheap ones made from natural rubber and like cheap tires will dry rot very fast. Unlike those cheap tires stems don't have any cords inside to reinforce them. Most shops just cut them off and replace them every time they change a tire. Of course with the tire pressure sensors being mandated the future of stems is in real question.

If you bend the stem with your hand and see cracks or if you hear air leaks then replace them. I have one of those el cheapo HF tire changers, works great for this as you only need to dismount the front side of the tire. By doing so you don't mess up the balancing.

But I don't think it's all valve stems. Years ago after driving about 100 miles I watched one of those small 8" tires just explode after sitting for 10 minutes.

The metal stem come in two different styles (or maybe more). There's one style that's all metal with a rubber washer that goes on both sides of the wheel and another style where it still has the usual "pop in" style base, I think they are a TR600. The all metal ones are fine but if they get hit they have no give.

I think your tire guy is off a little though. I think the standard stems are rated for 60 psi, not 50, it's an industry standard. If he's so worried about the stems then he could easily find and buy the EPDM TR600 stems, they only cost a few cents more so it's not like he would be loosing money. Plus he could put up a sign saying "we only use high quality high pressure valve stems" and put up several articles showing why the cheap ones are bad. Who here hasn't spent a half hour in a tire shop waiting for them to swap tires?

Very informative ^^^

Learn something everyday here at TBN

I now find myself looking at tire stems during my day...

Didn't even realize all my trailers have metal ones..

Not to wander too far off topic...

Who makes a good tire inflation air-chuck gauge?

I have a couple of older amflo 150's with the offset angled chuck that I like very much...

Last time I looked for a new one the chucks were all straight... bought one and don't like having to bend the rubber valve stem nearly 90 degrees to put in air. They numbers on the pop-out gauge also were not as sharp as my old ones...

I ended up buying another brand and it won't even pop-up till I have 30 psi and then it is off by 7 pounds... it's just junk...

I like this style tire gauge.
lng-50413_w.jpg

They come in different pressure ranges, I've seen as low as 0-15psi and as high as 0-160psi but I'm sure the range is wider than that. They come in glow in the dark so you can use them at night. Some of them come with tings swivel chucks, glycerin filled, and check valves to hold the reading until a button is pushed. Being analog they don't need batteries that can go flat. Most places like Summit Racing carries them. You can buy cheap or get pretty accurate ones. If you are looking for the pencil type then I suggest ebay, you should be able to find a US made one with an angle head.

I was thinking of one like this with the angle chuck shown in your picture...

Milton of course. I just bought a new one at the Auto Value parts store two days ago.

Ain't cheap at 32 bucks, but quality is never cheap.

The Milton had a magnifier glass over the graduations so they are easier to see......:)

If you have a serviceable body, Milton makes replacement hoses and angle chucks.....

Thanks for the info... I will check on it tomorrow...

Edit... you got a great deal... everything I find for the MILIS-505 is over $40

interesting point. perhaps last previous post in another thread is untimely about how much psi....

I always blamed my tire stems for my failures and blamed it on dryrot. perhaps metal is the only way to go with trailers?

I have one of those somewhere but since getting the style with the round gauge with the glow in the dark face I never use it. I just find myself checking/ filling tires during the winter months in the dark. It's larger though but a lot of different companies sell them so you can find one that fits your needs well. I even have one with a line on it so the GF can fill her tires to the correct pressure (idiot proof, did I say that?).

Ordered two... should be here in a few days...

I've been aware of the need for the HP metal stems for 16 years or so because by F350 came with them in the original wheels.
I've been around and around with tire dealers over the years about this, almost every one of them has been completely clueless about the need for proper stems.
Same thing with a proper patch, the type with the bonded flange inside the tire and the integral rubber plug filling the hole.
I got really PO'd recently when I took a properly patched, by me, tire to the dealer I bought it from to have it rebalanced. That was all I asked for, to have it balanced.
The idiot in the shop dismounted the tire and removed the proper patch and replaced it with just an interior patch, leaving the hole open in the tire:mad:
I took it back home, dismounted it and patched it correctly- again.
I didn't even say anything, it is pointless, they think they are the tire experts.
For those that don't know why it is important to seal the hole and the interior it is to keep either air (from the inside) or water from the outside getting in between the tire layers and causing separations. I read where the steel belts can even rust causing even more likelyhood of separating.

Metal can last a lifetime... one of my cars has the metal stems from 1930... still on the job.

1930????

I had not heard of the problems with the valve stems. The only time I've had a problem with one was in June, 2000, on a 1999 Ford Escort. I pulled the wheel off, checked the whole tire with soapy water without finding the leak, even around the valve stem. I was about ready to give up, when I found that if I wiggled the valve stem it leaked around it. I just attributed it to one bad one which can happen with any product.

Now of course, one day while gathering and piling brush with the pallet forks on my B2710 Kubota, somehow or other, I tore a valve stem right out of the left front wheel.

Bird, my mystery leak on my tractor front 4x4 tire. The valve stem had air bubbling at the brass threads. Some how the stem had seperated from the metal valve part..Couldn't get any thing to seal it up. I pulled it and installed new short 1 inch hi-performance steel stem..It fits from inside and has a nut to tighten on the outside. leak solved..

My two Milton #505 arrived today and they are made in USA and fully serviceable...

I did notice in the caution section not to use GAGE to check pressure with puncture proof liquids, chemical, anti-freeze liquids as used on Farm Tractors and not to pressurize any tank containing liquids...

Well, that just about covers all of my uses... I will have to be extra careful.

Re: Tire Valve Stems - where best to get metal ones online?

Bringing up this thread again -
Putting on 4 new trailer tires from Costco, (Greenball) wanted metal tire stems. Costco doesn't sell them, called all the "major" auto stores around - Pep Boys, Autozone, NTB, Merchants Tire - NOPE - Autozone said they sold "chromed plastic", Merchants will put them in IF you buy the tire and mounting package.

Alban Tire had some for $6 apiece.

I've got about 20 tires to replace in the next couple of years. I'd like to just get a box of valves and put them on the shelf.

Any recommended places?

amazon has everything.

various metal styles (inside mount, outside mount, bent etc) ~$9 for set of 4

Amazon.com: Gorilla Automotive VS402C Inner Mount Valve Stems: Automotive
Yes, I saw that, but that "search" on amazon turned up 2,289 hits - and probably most of them for valve stem caps. :(

That's why I was asking here.

And on Grainger I can get
33W546_AS01
in a 100 pack for $133. HALTEC Truck/Bus Tire Valve, 2 In, Pk 100 - Tire Valve Stems and Cores - 33W546|TV-500A-100 - Grainger Industrial Supply
so I was wondering where the TBN'ers buy their valves.

Someone had posted metal is required for 50 psi and above by DOT regs.

My old truck tire shop in town has lots of metal stems...

There are wholesale houses that cater to tire shops... I bought a box of Schrader stems from one...

Our 3/4 and one ton trucks running LTL or private hauler come OEM with high pressure rubber snapins for decades which are rated at 100 psi.
