All,
I just tore out the side wall on my rear 224. I believe it is the 8.3 x 24. Looks like it will need replacement. I would like to replace with a MUCH wider tire. I remember reading somewhere that there may be an issue with the 4x4 unit and tire size. What can I replace with and still use the same rims?

Thanks guys.

The issue with 4wd and tire sizes is keeping the same ratio of roling circumference to prevent skuffing or driveline windup.

In general most 4wd systems are designed so thet the front tires ever so slightly lead the rears.. etc.

Good advice Soundguy. I'd like to add that you will first have to find rims to accept the wider tires. The tire is already matched to the rim, so your stuck with the 8.3 x 24 tire. I'm still debating whether or not to get a set of turf tires/rims from NorTrac. There's not much info available on rims, but I'll keep looking around too.

According to my spec sheet, the 8.3x24 is fitted on 180/184/200/204 Jinmas. Your 224 is listed as sharing a 9.5x24 with the 220/250/254 and presumably the 284. I've no reason to doubt that they both use the same rim.

So if in fact your 224 was fitted with the smaller 8.3 rear, stands to reason that you should be able to go up at least to a 9.5 on that rim - as long as the tread circumference does not increase.

The JM200 series with 9.5x24 have 6x16 fronts, so the overall diameter/circumfrence dose change between the 8.2 and 9.5, and you only gain an inch or so of width, hardly noticeable.

There are some dealers offereing R-4 tires as an option now on Jinmas, but they run upwards of $1500 for a set.
