Hello,
I just picked up a Ford 1220 4X4 and it has turf tires on it. When I asked the dealer to find me a set of AG's or R4's for it and he told me it is nearly impossible to fit those types of tires on this tractor due to it's "odd" size rim. He also explained how crucial it is to properly size the tires in order to avoid "binding" and possibly damaging the 4 wheel drive system.

Is this true?

If so, does anyone know if there is any size AG or R4 I can safely put on this tractor.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Rgards,
John

Of course it's true. Why would he lie to you for the purpose of losing a sale? Ford never offered an R-4 tire option for 20 series compacts. The proper R-1 sizes for a 1220 appear to be 4.00x 12 front and 9.5x16 rear. The rims are metric dimension bolt circle and pilot hole and not easy to find or cheap to buy. Do not deviate from the final drive ratios that these sizes provide.

If you get replacement tires, you need to first measure the circumference of the rear and front tires. Then calculate the ratio (Rear / front). You can then buy the new tires that have the same ratio -- even if the circumferences are not the same.

Hello All.
Thanks for all the replies on this however, I bring a new question... :)

I want new AG or R4's so I can make it through the winter plowing snow. And from what I've been told and have been reading these Turf's and 4 wheel drive may be enough and in some cases better than R4's.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks again, this site and you guys are great.

I had a Ford 1210 4 x 4 Hydro with turf tires for 26 years (2000 hrs total) nd never had many issues with traction and didn't even have the tires loaded. I have a total of 800' of uphill drives. The original turf rires on the rear lasted that entire time, the fronts I replaced due to loader work ruining the sidewalls. I repalced the original Goodyear fronts with cheap off brand tires and regreted it as the original Goodyear turf we far bette then the cheaper replacements. Back to the subject, I have plowed snow with all 3 types and for snow in my opinin the Goodyear turf tires were the best performing on snow and ice by far. I grew up on a farm many years and loaded AG tires needed chains to even move. I currenty have a Kioti DK-35 SE HST with R-4 tirs all around, rears loaded. Ice, snow, & clay traction is marginal at best. I will need chains for all 4 wheels for snow for traction and to reduce side slip. I did have a set of rear chains for the 1210 that I used for one winter out of 28 winters I has the tractor as we had a lot of wet packy snow that winter. I carried a small pail of wood ash or sawdust that sprinkled on the tires if I started spinning. Used the loader and a 7' rear blade, then later a 64" Blizzard 3 point snow blower (on a 1210!) that I now use on my Kioti. My 1st choice for snow is good turf tires (goodyear field & turf) and a set of rear chains or 4 wheel chains, and ballast such loaded rear tires. I live in the REAL UPSTATE of New York, 75 miles North of Albany.
