Internet research. Its amazing what you can find on the internet for usefull info. Even though I use it a lot, both at work and for personal stuff, I often forget to do a little research on line when tackling a project.
For example, about a year ago my sons 99 Aurora started having problems with the headlights flashing. The dealership said it cost a few hundred dollars to replace the multi function switch. This switch runs the turn signals, wipers, head lights and cruise on this car, and the part alone isn't cheap. I finally decided to do a search on the internet and found step by step instructions with pictures on a Aurora Forum on how to get at the switch and clean it. It cost me something like $10 for some contact cleaner and less than an hours time.
