Fertilizer on new grass seed. This was a lesson I learned the hard way. Its probably pretty obvious, especially anyone with a farm background.

Several years ago I seeded down a couple of areas in my yard and I had some left over fertilizer and used it on the freshly seeded areas. Nothing grew. I figured the clay wouldn't grow new grass very well so I spread some topsoil, seeded and fertilized it again. Once again, nothing grew, and I mean nothing.

It turns out I was using fertilizer that was meant to kill crabgrass. Unknown to me, its a preemergence type weed killer. I thought so what, I don't want any crabgrass growing in my freshly seeded areas anyway. Well, it turns out its a preemergence killer for everything, including grass seed. Lesson learned, don't use this stuff on new grass seed, and it never hurts to read the label.

Yeah, kind of like when I put something together and read the directions after the fact.
