For decades I've noticed a piece of flat chromed metal around 8" long, welded to the right hand side of an occasional trailer hitch at a 90° angle. At the end of this piece of metal sits a tiny chromed hitch ball. Can someone please tell me what these hitch balls are used for. I don't even have a good guess.

I've seen them used for a hitch stabilizing device. Either by friction or hydraulic, like a shock absorber.

For stabilizer arms. I guess they stop the sway on travel trailers.
