tinnitus treatment?

Just checked the link - with volume on high, the purple one hurts my ears. I can believe it is very computer dependent - frequency response of he speakers etc. It was just at the edge of my hearing. I have a Mac laptop.

None of the ringing was quite like i hear from my TMJ etc. Mine sounds like a lower frequency version of the blue one. I have lost some hearing - i now have to turn up the sound much louder than I used to and have a harder time understanding what people say.

I have high frequency hearing loss and most women are impossible to understand in difficult situations like bars or public places.

In my case, it's more of an individual situation. Some women, and even some men, speak in a frequency that makes it very difficult for me to understand them. And I don't guess there are any small children that I can understand.

Perhaps the most annoying thing of all is the answering machines that most companies use in this day and age. Their recorded messages are loud and clear, push 1 for this or 2 for that, etc. And then, if or when a human comes on the line he or she will be next to impossible to understand.:(

I don't see any comments from medical doctors on this thread. There must be more out there than me who have tractors and read the discussions.

In any case I want to generally acknowledge the accuracy of the information that has been shared. Tinnitus and the accompanying hearing loss is very frustrating for folks who have it and for the doctors that take care of them. There is one piece of information I haven't seen mentioned and want to stress. Once noise induced hearing loss is initiated the nerves in the ear are actually increasingly vulnerable to noise. I have had many patients with the misapprehension that since they have already lost some hearing (and can't hear the noise as much as they used to) that the damage is done and protection isn't necessary. Just the contrary is true. It takes much less noise exposure to lose the second half of your hearing, than the first half. As for tinnitus the insult to the injury is that if you have it even if hearing fades, the tinnitus likely won't. Use hearing protection.

Finally proper hearing aids (those fitted by professional audiologists) have sound levels controlled to stay below damaging decibel levels. Of course wives in general like hearing aids, but they don't help everyone. There is type of "hearing loss" common in the elderly that is centered in the brain rather than the ears. In that circumstance the sounds heard aren't able to be interpreted as words. Hearing aids don't help that, but then again noise doesn't cause it either.

Thanks Mudfarmer for that post. I try to explain that to my friends who have hearing loss and think since they already do not hear so well, they do not need hearing protection.

I have it too. I've always had it, I just never knew the name. I thought it was normal to have a constant "noise" in my head when it was quiet out. It gets worse when around loud noises for a period of time. I don't listen to loud music anymore. I always wear hearing protection when operating my tractor. I took the loud pipes off my motorcycle and put the quiet stock ones back on. I too like to have some sort of background noise, music on

Not only have I gotten used to mine, it makes a good background for the voices.

I too have a Mac laptop but cannot hear the purple except for tiny clicks at the start and end of the sample. Neither could my wife. I wonder....

I too suffer from tinnitus since I was about 18. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to but it makes it hard to hear at times.

BTW: There is another disease similar to Bell's Palsy that I actually believe I had. They are often misdiagnosed. Look up Ramsey-Hunt. It has very similar attributes but I think it has more to do with damaging the ear.

Thanks alot guys, you gave me another problem I never knew I had :)

Never even remember hearing the word before, and definitely didn't know what it meant, til out of curiosity I clicked on this thread.
Now I definitely got it!

I am the perfect candidate for it apparently, using jack hammers all my life, for hours at a time sometimes day after day. I do basement drainage work and have to cut through the concrete floors. we use electric jack hammers so not as bad as air but they are still quite load.

I almost always use ear plugs but sometimes not and back in the day not as much, I even use ear plugs when I mow the lawn now.

I think some of it must be psychological, like I said I hardly ever noticed it but now that I'm thinking about it, it's much more noticeable, between a hiss and a ring. If you concentrate on it, it gets real load.

I didn't read to many posts here but got the gist that there's no real cure? good thing mines not that bad yet, I will definitely start being more cautious and maybe get some better hearing protection than just those foam plugs. My hearing overall doesn't seem to be affected (no hearing loss).

Meniere's Disease is not that easy to diagnose per my wife's experiance. She was born deaf in one ear and very limited in the other, enough to be "legally deaf". She also has vertigo now and then with one bout lasting six weeks.

Anyway, a few years ago, she had a blood vessel blow in her nasal system while doing some yard work. Long story short, she was bleeding like something on sci-fi. One helicoptor ride later, she spends a couple of weeks in the hospital. They fixed the vessel(s) by cauterizing but the episode triggered everything else. She spent two weeks going through test after test only to have two nurologists in disagreement over having or not having Meniere's Disease. The only medication they could prescribe upset her stomach. I want to say it was something like dramamine.

With her hearing aid not working all that much for her and her tinnitus roaring, she had a coclear implant last summer. She still has tinnitus which has somewhat slowed does the "mapping" process that an implant requires. The implant does help to negate the tinnitus but not totally stop it. She usually has to exhaust herself to fall asleep.

As for myself, I have "artillery ears" and too much seat time on top of an 8V71 along with the usual heavy equipment, big vaccuum pumps, etc. etc. If I get near the CNC machines at work which are somewhere between a nuisance and required protection, I get ringing. I also have it now as I sit here typing with the volumn down on the TV, the dogs settled, etc. Once I take my shower, I won't hear it nor will it keep me awake. Guess that's a good thing?

Bird, I must have the same hearing loss as you.I only hear the first two colors also. If you want hear the TV,I bought some wireless headphones off ebay. The transmitter plugs in the audio out jacks of the TV set . Made A world of difference in my TV watching.I can turn the set real loud & still not understand the dialog. But with the headphones I kinda feel normal.Mike
