Timing magneto on Fiat 25 C dozer

I follow instructions in manual. No 4 cyl TDC compression stroke. Magneto place no 4 contactor facing no4 contact on mag cover adjust bolts on maggy to have points just opening magneto good passes Lucas bench test. Can only get it to pop through exhaust when cranking. what am I doing wrong?


Both Dozers have engine numbers just over the 500 mark, Can anyone tell me the approxamite

Bring cylinder #1 up to "just before Top Dead Center" on a compression stroke. Set the mag just before TDC on #1. As you pull the crank through the impulse coupler should trip just as the timing mark passes TDC. With the engine running the spark will be advanced because the impulse will not engage at running speed.

Thank you Norm for your infirmation. That is the way I thought it should be timed. but decided to gfollow the manual. I will be at it come daylight. Dopes anyone have any idea of year of manifacture.
