timer on a water hydrant?

Can you place a timer on a water hydrant below a pressure reducing valve? The hydrant was installed by a licensed plumber and is on current code.
The hydrant is used to water back yard trees and shrubs.

Sure. There are lots of water timers/valves on the market. Easiest is to leave the hydrant open and use the valve in-line on hose. You'll find in the hardware box stores (orange or blue) and from many plumbing or irrigation supply houses.

Dunno about leavign frost frees open. Way back (25 to 30 years ago) I installed 6 frost free hydrants and put "Christmas trees" valves on them, usually 2 per hydrant. Turned on hydrant in spring and regulated sprinklers and troughs with the valves. Closed in the fall. One by one they were not able to be opened in the spring. Only two can still be opened. Mechanically 'froze up'. I have been told that is due to the small amount of fine sediment my well pumps.

I use an inexpensive timer connected to a drip system in my veggie garden. It is on a frost free hydrant and seems to work well. Pretty simple screw on stuff, or, are you talking about a more sophisticated type of timer system?

By 'pressure reducing valve' do you mean an anti-backflow device? It shouldn't matter, those are to protect you if the water line loses pressure.
