Brasso, now there is an idea...! Seriously though, I can't imagine there is not a product out there that could restore some life to the fading steel on an aging pole barn structure. There are some pretty decent treatments for rust out there, but it takes time to clean off the loose rust and the products are all pretty pricey. Before spending the money to paint your building, I would price what it would cost to remove the existing siding and install new siding.

Has anyone tried to restore the luster/shine/original look of their pole barn, without painting?

A friend had someone come out and they did a corner of his very faded forest green garage, 3'x3', just to see. It was pretty expensive to do so he didn't do the whole roof but I looked at it and it was nice.

My forest green roof is faded but steep enough to not want to paint it. I did try scrubbing the bottom couple feet with scrubbies, buffer, bleach, any other chemicals along with elbow grease but it was a no go. Barely changed the color.

The only sure way to change the color for a somewhat long lasting experience is to re-tin it. So it is still on and faded.

It was originally used on sea going vessels. Let it neutralize, turn black, and harden, then paint right over it. It's thin like water and can be brushed, sprayed. I致e used rust converter for years with good success on implements and metal patio furniture. Saves a huge amount of prep time however the final surface finish is not nearly as nice as sanding to bare metal.
Building painting up date.
Good spouse wanted a few days RV relaxing in the UP so just picked up the materials yesterday. Going to replace a couple of corner trim that have taken a few love marks over the years and re glaze a couple window sashes B/4
Power washing the building. Hoping the weather holds into next week as I suspect the prep time will will be more than double the actual painting time so stay tuned.

Welll my cousin and I discussed these types of things omen a few occasions. He was 81 and wasnt sure just how to please his 2 lady friends. One wanted to care for him and one wanted him for playtime....the big concern, were they only after his stuff,,,,,

I've used Sherwin Williams paints with excellent results. One of my out buildings was painted with their "Barn Red" paint. That was 35 years ago and it still looks red and OK. The out building is wood and I would guess the paint was lead based. I don't think you can go wrong with what SW will recommend these days for your metal pole building.
