Time for something new?

BandD.. don't think thats quite true. The cash discount on it was only 800 dollars. I did finance it so I ought to at least loose the 800 dollars and then some for the use.

Ah well... such is life. I don't really NEED a bigger tractor and probably best that this didn't work out as I would have to pay more for a Grand L anyway and I am best off keeping my money right now as this tractor is doing a great job for me.

How much are the taxes? And is that both GST and PST? I know Canadian taxes seem ridiculously high. You might try offering 13% less than the US price, converted to Canadian, plus the GST/PST on that amount and see what they say. They may not want not go for that since it seems so hard to find an L39 in stock in your area, but it may give you a starting point for negotiations.

In Alberta we only have the GST sales tax and it's 6% .. We are the lucky province only having 1 tax. :)

no, none at all. I live just north of a CDA/USA border town and drive over to Michigan every week or so. My good Kubota dealer in Michigan even has the forms to sign so I didn't have to pay Michigan sales tax.

When you come back to Canada they ask "do you have anything to declare". I suggested "uh no, other then the tractor I am pulling". Border service takes your invoice and adds the exchange and then GST and PST (14% total in Ontario). That's it!

Right now is a great time to buy with the almost even exchange.

So you paid taxes only? I figured they would have charged duty on something like this.. Well this is good news espc since i'm in Alberta and we only have GST to pay! :) Time to plan a trip..

I was offerred $17500 CDN for the L3400 HST w. loader and industrial tires. I paid just under $23k +GST/PST a year ago. It only has 50 hours on it now - it's basically brand new.

~$6K to loose on a machine for 50 hours of use is a bit much IMHO. Then again I don't really NEED to make any change now so I'll hang on to it. Purchasing much more for my needs would be frivilous!

If I do plan on being frivilous at some point in the future, I'll hope that our dollar is doing well and go pick one up from the U.S.A

I agree with you there is no reason to take a $6000 hit on something with so few hours. When they quoted you the $23k when you bought the L3400 did you happen to get a price on a L2800? I'm curious what they were asking for them out east at that time.

When I purchased my L3130 in 2004 the dealer almost matched the going USA price after the exchange rate was factored in. I think I may have paid $500-$600 more. I am really pleased with the dealer. They have been very fair in all my dealings with them. The tractor has been back to the dealer 4 times and not once was I charged for pickup or delivery and the dealer is almost an hours drive from my house.

My dealer isn't so forgiving when the topic of USA pricing is brought up. You get this sort of blank stare and topic quickly changes. My tractor has been back to the dealer a few times without charge as well so I'm not treated too too badly. However I am considering a change in dealers depending how my next visit goes.

Don't quite remember the exact price difference between a L2800 and My L3400. At the time I didn't think it was enouch to justify not getting extra PTO hp.

Thats a good point you bring up. Aren't these tractors manufactured in Japan ? which ought to imply a 6% duty?

no, there is no duty on anything since the dreaded GST was brought in. At least not on anything I ever bought....cameras, optics, tractors, clothes, implements, fishing gear etc.,

However CDA Border Services do charge GST & PST (if applicable) on privately purchased large ticket items. So, even if you bought a used L39 for say US$27000 privately they would charge the exchange and then the tax on top.

You Albertans have it great. You should be able to sell your existing tractor at home and then venture down to the US and trailer back a shiny new or used tractor at a great deal. Now's the time to buy!

Northland - did you have to show them anything that proved the place of manufacture?

no, nothing at all except the invoice. I think the duty/origin issues went out with NAFTA and the GST
