Tractor
Deere 410e, international 300 Utility, Ford 8n
Hello all,

I am looking to upgrade my utility tractor. I Just got another vacant land parcel roughly 11 acres, It came with an old worn out ford 8n and brush hog, While this tractor works for some brush hogging, it burns an unbelievable amount of oil, and tires are shot, and its just weak and tired in every aspect. I also have a 1955 international 300 utility, in decent shape, just working on getting it running, and finding missing parts is a challenge and it is still an older tractor, if i put enough money into it it might be workable.

What I need a utility tractor for is, the back 6 acres or so was at one point in its life farmed, but plowed, and then let grow wild. so it is very bumpy, and filled with horrible weeds. The goal is to have horse pasture back there, however I need to get the land ready to plant a smoother pasture grass. I have a KingKutter 20-18 6.5' disc, I need a tractor to pull it, from the specs I read anything around 35hp or so will do the job, So this for sure puts the old 8n out, this will be going up for sale shortly. I would like to move into a diesel tractor, and have been looking at the deere 2150's or 1020's, I am looking to spend 4-7k on something.

I do excavating for a living, I have a john deere 450 dozer, and 410e backhoe/loader. I do not need a utility tractor with a loader or backhoe since I have a great tractor for that already, I need something with a 3 point, and PTO, I also have a 753 bobcat, and 320 mini excavator. Bob cat has a 3 point attachment for the front, but as far as driving backwards in that pulling the disk around, I don't think is going to get the job done correctly.

After discing the rear field ( all topsoil right now about 1.5' deep, then loamy wet sand) I will only need the tractor for mowing, brush hog, moving hay trailer around, and little jobs like that, Depending on how the lawn and pasture grow, I might only need a nice 0 turn mower, and will be able to sell the tractor and disc down the road.

So I don't want to spend all my time fixing and working on tractors, I have enough construction equipment to keep me busy. I would prefer diesel since I always have it on hand at the shop.

my thought is sell the 8n, and 300 utility, and look for something similar sized to the 300 in diesel.

Other than Deere, not sure what I should look for? models? opinions on what I do or do not need?

any thoughts would be great thanks so much, been lurking on the site for a while, but finally posting.

A Ford 2000 or 3000 diesel would be just about right for you and fit your price range. Those little 3-cylinders were very dependable and are still relatively easy to find parts for. You are going to want power steering for disking rough plowed ground and those models usually have it. You would need a little more cash to get a good, used 4wd tractor and a disk really benefits from 4wd, probably more so than any implement except a front loader. Personally, I cant stand 3-point disks and have yet to see one I thought was worth more than its weight in scrap metal. Once you see how much more effective a pull-type disk is, it is hard to go back to a 3-point. My 1951 Ford 8n easily handles an 8 ft pull-type disk, but it did struggle a bit with the 6.5 ft, 3-point I had prior.

Another option for you might be: Sell the 300 and the 3-point disk and put the money into fixing up the 8n (easiest tractor in the world to find parts for), and an old "drag-type" 8 ft. disk.

I don't know if you've considered it, but there are a couple of local guys not far from you that you could hire to clear the weeds and then disc everything. That might give you time to decide what you need for long-term rather than the immediate tasks.

You didn't state budget.

I bought this tractor last December for $8500. I put an additional $2500 in it including new rear tires. It fits my needs perfectly. I too, didn't need an FEL tractor. Just a reliable, long term mid sized tractor. It takes a lot of pressure off my larger FEL tractor to do those simple daily chores.

47HP, diesel, 8F/4R shuttle transmission, 3cyl diesel, limit slip front axle, rear diff lock, draft control/position control 3pt, pwr steer, wet brakes, CAT II 3pt.

I'm betting with what you have, you could easily barter for someone to smooth it down for you. Likely someone out there needs a drainage ditch or something dozed.
