First of all, let me say that you're house is very beautiful and THANK YOU for sharing your experience.

Secondly, you mentioned or there was discussion about wiring your home for networking vs. wireless. I didn't see a response (but could have overlooked it), so let me chime in. Cat6 wired is FAR faster than wireless. Wireless-N can give you 300Mbps vs Cat-6 a theoretical 1 Gbps, more than 3 times. Wireless obviously has it's benefits, but for raw speed when I work from home, I have a drop in my office.

Lastly, I was drawn to your thread as we are contemplating SIPs and that led us to the timberframe construction. Where WE are building though (old farm), I'm not sure it would look as good. Gonna have to rethink it I think.

Thank you again!

I remember the discussion and honestly don't remember if there was a reply without re-reading. We did end up running Cat-6 to all rooms for the very reason you mentioned. Also I have all of our movies ripped to a hard drive and we stream a lot of movies. The blue rays require a lot of data transfer and I like to run a wired connection for those.

Also - I didn't quite follow, which part of your build are you re-thinking? The use of SIPS or timberframe? Thanks for the compliments.

"Rethink" the timber frame? wow I think old farm is the best setting for Timber frame - think carriage house, gable or gambrel barn! Several Timber framer's up north have some wonderful examples of Timber frame that fit into a farmstead setting including matching existing buildings look/feel (The Barn Yard, BlackDog Timber frames, and others, as well as the company that built our houses in this area could do a great structure and travel - shipping/travel cost come into play though)

I do the same thing with our movies. Another reason for using wired Cat6!

I think we'll still use SIPs at this point, just unsure of the timber frame. A little to "rustic" for me, and the Mrs. doesn't care for the tongue and groove on the ceilings (I actually like that!). You had some really unique touches in your bathrooms...very creative on your part!

You might check out Davis Frames and some of their photos for ideas. Some of their finished houses are a little too modern for me and not quite rustic enough but may be closer to your tastes.

Ok gentlemen. I'm looking for advise. Would you let this one slide? I probably should however this one really irritates me. I ran into our framer for the house several days ago and he asked how everything turned out. He had not seen the house since before sheetrock was installed. I offered to send him links to pictures and did. He then asked if he could post some of the pics on his social media page and website. I agreed and didn't really care, I just assumed credit would be given where credit was due. He quickly posted only the finished pics of the house with the a message that read

"This is a great example of a beautiful new post frame home we were excited to build. The owners sent these wonderful pictures of the finished home"

In all of the reply's on the site about what an amazing job he did on the house not once did he give credit to anyone else or specify that he only framed the house. I know this probably shouldn't bother me but after 2 years of designing and working on this house it just irritates me to see him take credit for the finished product. Maybe ranting on here will help me with some of my frustration on this one and I can just bite my tongue.

Hmm did he specifically state or imply that they did all the work or just not clarify that others did significant amount (and all of the visible) of the work?

Don't let it bug you too much (does it really matter?), but it might be worth a conversation with him - he may be asked for references and if your house is prominent on his website that may lead to you - let him know that you would appreciate him being more forthright about the work he did and what was done by others.

He didn't specifically state that he did all the work however no credit was given to anyone else and his comments implied that this was one of their homes. They build and sell a lot of turn-key homes from the ground up. Ours was quickly added to his portfolio of homes. And you are right, it doesn't really matter, I'm not in the building business, just was irritating to see.

After seeing "your" work on this house maybe you should be in the building business!

Thank you. I am actually just getting started on a remodel for Mom. My time is free on this one and I'm happy to be able to help her. I doubt if it goes any further than hers. I may start a thread on it. After sitting down with her contractor/designer to go over the contract I was shocked at what was being presented and the lack of answers to my questions. Really deceptive contract for what was supposed to be a turn-key remodel. Maybe more on that in another thread if I get around to it.
